New Pedal Force frame opportunity. Opinions anyone?

Hi all,

So I ordered a full QS2 build from pedal force last night. I get the following in an email from Ming this morning.

Dear James,

Thanks for your order. The QS2 frame size 53cm is out of stock now and
your order will be backorder till end of June. Alternatively, if you're
interested we can offer you an alternative model which is available for
immediate shipping. We're planning to launch this later this year or
sometime next year. Please see attached pic of the QS2-S. "S" stands for
stiff version. This is very similar to the QS2 but has the following
differences:

1) Uses higher grade Toray MS30 carbon fiber. The QS2 uses Toray T700
carbon fiber.

2) Slightly heavier than the QS2 (by about 50 g) but 15% stiffer than
the QS2 at the bottom bracket, 10% stiffer at the head tube and 25%
stiffer chainstays (lateral).

3) The QS2-S 53cm has almost the same geometry as the QS2 53cm but has
74 deg seat tube angle instead of 74.5 deg for the QS2.

The QS2-S is a more expensive model than the QS2. We can offer it to you
at a pre-launch price of $700 if you're interested.

Regards,
Ming

I did some personal research and spoke with co-workers regarding Toray's different fiber options. The M30S does show desirable increases in multiple areas.

I asked for pictures of the top tube / seat tube area as I am curious to see the detail of that connection.

Also, I inquired as to the staging of this frame. If it is a production level part, then why is there no release until next year. If it's a prototype, will I be guaranteed full warranty coverage? With a compression molded part, especially from overseas, there is no reason he would have only a few production quality parts. If this is the final version he should have a full batch of them.

Anyway, talk amongst yourselves and let me know!

Wasn't Patriot's bike an initial prototype? Persoanlly I would do it...but that is just me. How much longer is the effective TT due to the change in angle of the ST?

You brought up some very interesting questions. Has the guys at pedalforce responded to them yet? I would like to know the answers myself.
If it wasn't for the questions you bought up that new frame would be something I would want to buy. So your saying the regular QS2 isn't very stiff? Would the new s version be something you would want to race with?

I have a newly built PF QS2 and love it. If they offer you that deal then I say go for it. Stiffer.......could be nicer. The regular QS2 is plenty stiff for me. See my build using key word search QS2.

I don't know. Maybe Patriot can chime in on that. I'd be curious to know if he had an early version of the QS2. I also don't know the answer to your second question. I am going to receive more information tomorrow.

I had hoped to hear back from Ming today, but they are on east coast time, so I'm assuming he's gone home for the day. I guess tomorrow will be the day I get some answers.

I'm not making any assumptions on the stiffness of the original version, only that this model is claimed to be significantly stiffer.

I think that as long as I can be assured full warranty with this product, I will be processing my order tomorrow. I should have a ride report by next week some time!

I do plan on racing with this frame, so hopefully it will be up for the task.

I just talked to Ming again and it's final.
Now for the bad news! It won't be here until next Monday :'(
So all weekend I'll be tormenting myself waiting. Oh well.

So apparently I'll be the first on BF to ride a QS2-S. Now if only someone local had a QS2 so we could compare and contrast...

Geometry will be emailed tomorrow, so I'll post that up when I have it.

Also, Ming mentioned that this is a full production level frame, they are just pending a few things and waiting for release time.

I'm excited! The exiciting aspects of the build are:

New QS2-S frame
Easton EC90 fork
Ritchey WCS stem
Deda Magic bars
PF seat post
Fizik Aliante Ti saddle
Ultegra Spinny stuff (except for...)
FSA SLK carbon compact crank
and a blang-a-lang Dura-ace chain
Mike Garcia custom other spinny things

I think that's everything.

Looks like a great build and a great new frame. I'll just put in a plug for the Shimano R700 cranks as an alternative to the FSA. I just added these to my bike (replacing DuraAce for my old tired knees) and the finish is just as nice as the DA (though slightly more shiny) and the shifting is just as good. I really like the new Shimano bottom brackets and I think the R700 is a really good product.

Sorry I should have been more clear...I believe Patriot's bike was a prototype of the other CF bike..the ZX-3, not the QS-3. But I haven't heard anything but positives from him on his bike.

This looks like a great frame to start a build on, I may have to email Pedal Force to see about it, but I really want a TT bike first.

I'm particularly interested in the seat tube junction area, it looks like a new design. Does the regular QS2 use a bonded lug to join the seatstays to the seat tube? The top tube and seatstays on the new model may be a single unit, with the seat tube passing through them on the new QS-2-S.

I saw those too, both on eBay, look identical to the QS2-S pics posted earlier, they even mention the manufacturer in the eBay listing

55cm Frameset

50cm Frameset

I love this new frame. I think the guy selling them on ebay is associated with PF somehow.

I have the ZX3. I got the ZX3 a couple years ago long before anyone on here even heard of Pedal Force, and before they were available for sale. Even before the QS2 was even thought of. It came out later. I just got lucky while surfing the net, because I was going to get one of their ZX2's at the time, but they had none left in my size, so he offered me the ZX3 prototype.

I absolutely love the new QS-2-S. I think it would be a good candidate for getting two frames, one for me and my wife, and building a couple of matching bikes for the both of us, with coustom paint jobs. I'm thinking iridescent fuscea, with white and bare carbon accents. Somehow I may have a hard time riding pink. But who knows.

BTW, the wrap around of the carbon from the top tube to the chain stays, is quite reminiscent of the Scott CR-1 engineering.

Those ebay frames do look very similar, however I notice a few major differences.

The carbon listed in the ebay ad is listed as "HM carbon fiber". The carbon on the QS2-S is a Toray M30S. I don't know what high modulus carbon this is referring to. It may be the same as the PF it may not. Also, the weights on the ebay auctions are inconsistant with the PF weights.

In any case, if these are or are not the same frame I don't really care. Pedal Force has proven they sell a solid product and I have faith in them to continue to do so. Also, even if the frame turns out to be a dissapointment, the prices on components through PF makes it a deal in and of itself.

As for this, I can't comment. I can say however that my frame has been confirmed to be decal free by Ming.

I received a tracking # this morning from a singapore company saying my frame has begun the process of leaving singapore. I was also told my components would ship friday.

Is this consistent with those who have ordered in the past?

I am positive my frame is coming from Singapore. I have a tracking # for speedpost.com.sg which is a singapore based postal service.

I just received an email from Ming stating the frame will be here in 5-6 days and the components will ship Friday and arrive Monday or Tuesday.

Here are the new pics and spec sheet I received from Ming.

Nims, you'll need to weigh your frame once you get it, the weight on the eBay auctions are actual weights, not estimates according to the seller. It is interesting that .sg is the internet domain for Singapore and the seller is sgwheelman. I wonder if that is a coincidence.

AS you noted HM Carbon is just a generic title for high modulus carbon and could be from any manufacturer. I am sure you are going to be happy with you ride choice.

I know that I will be. As I mentioned, the ability to purchase components at such an amazing price is worth the deal enough. In addition to that, the warranty combines to make buying from PF a better deal for me than ebay or the like.

I have no concerns with over seas products. I'm a project (R&D/prototype) engineer and we outsource manufacturing to asia for most all projects. The quality has the potential to be equal to manufacturing in any other country. While there are many terrible QC issues with some overseas manufacturers, there are many facilities with outstanding records for product quality. I am stoked.

Man, that looks great. With that list of components, what to do figure your total cost for the build will be?
