Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

does anyone own a BMC Streetfire SSX?

i'm frame shopping and the the BMC Streetfire SSX in size XL has good geometry for me, and looks like a great frame for the price.

the weight is a little high, but it's not a huge deal as my serious racing days are most likely done with.

the SL01 has carbon seatstays, weights about 1lb less (around 3lbs, vs. the ssx's 4lbs) costs about $350 more, but the geometry doesn't work quite as well for me.

to anyone who rides one, how's the handling? snappy ride and climbing? how does it compare to other Al frames you've ridden in terms of stiffness/harshness? does the EC70 do a good job at taking the edge off?

thanks!

I just built one for a friend. It was built with Dura Ace 10 and Easton Vista SL wheels. He was kind enough to let me take it on a quick 20 miler. Bike weighs in at 16.9 pounds. Very responsive and a good bit more stiff tham my S-Works. All in all, I think it is a nice frame. There are Easton stamps on all of the tubing. He purchased it from Competitive Cyclist. I was not happy with the cable routing. You would have to see one to understand. This is a minor thing though. Great frame for the price!

thanks for the info.

if you don't mind explaining more, what didn't you like about the cable routing? the pictures make it look like it's got a pretty standard rear brake line on the bottom of the top tube, derailleur lines on the bottom of the down tube.

seems to be all external cable routing, yes?

Hi

I just got a Streetfire SS01 last week, and I'm very happy with it. I rode the SSX while evaluating bikes, and while it was probably mostly due to a bad fit of the handlebar, I wasn't really happy with the geometry. I like the components though, and the finish on those bikes is great.

It is all external cabling. Mine has the EC70 as well, and it takes enough off the edge for me.

My only problem is that the crank arm is too far away from the frame for the magnet of my Edge 305 to trigger the sensor...

Cheers
Chris
