Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Drafting info

Does anybody out there know of a visual or graph I could use from a book or website that would show the effects of drafting? Trying to explain it with words and numbers (percentages) to a non-rider is not that easy.

Here's how I explain it...

The drafter uses up to 30% less energy to maintain the same speed without drafting.

Or...

The drafter is capable of up to a 30% increase in speed at the same energy output.

These percentages go up with a larger group.

It depends. Are you drafting behind Andre The Giant or Tattoo?

Drafting revolves around the notion that it's easier to pedal when there's someone in front of you to cut the wind. Cycling experts say that "drafting" like this can save you between 20 and 40 percent of your energy in a long event.
from slate.com

So its really just getting up close to someone (about 1 ft. or less prefferably) and letting the person in front of you take all the wind. This allows you to use, as the post above says, about 30% less energy.

The best way i like to explain this...

Go drive in your car, put your hand out your window like everyone does...err, did, when they were a kid and "feel" the forces against your hand. Now put your hand in front of the mirror, little easier to move around? In a sense, your hand is now drafting the mirror.

Agree....We did a TTT recently where I had to follow the smallest guy in the team to the front....it was like, 'Do a turn, then do another turn'....no wonder I got dropped...or maybe it was the hangover!

Actually, that one isn't true because the power to overcome drag is proportional to speed cubed. A 30% decrease in drag will end up being ~10% increase in speed at the same power output... but only for the person drafting.
