Chainring wear question?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Chainring wear question?

Hello everyone. I have a 2-3 month old '05 Felt F70 with FSA Gossamer triple and while cleaning the bike I noticed a lot of wear / broken tips on the big chainring. I am about 208lbs and usually ride about 15miles or more per day and adding more all the time (currently od showing 330miles). I will be contacting my LBS about a warranty replacement but was wondering what is the typical wear on this item and should the teeth being wore down concern me. I am at work (cough) so no pic at the moment.

You shouldn't see wear like that in 2 - 3 months. If you're seeing the tips of the teeth broken it may be the result of hard shifting. Are you maintaining considerable torque on the crank while you're shifting?

those are called ramps. They are there on purpose to help the big ring pick up the chain when shifting from the small one.

Carefully inspect any modern bike with multiple chainrings and you'll see the ramps on those teeth too.

I weigh about 200 and have about 5000miles on my FSA Gossamer double. Unless you've had a very unusual crash, everything is fine.

Well, something isn't right. My chainrings are getting pretty worn, but I've got 14k + miles on them, and am just about to change my chain for only the third time. Even horribly bad shifting habits don't seem like they'd do that. Are you sure they're actually chipped and "shark finny"?

Modern chainrings don't have the same teeth the whole way around. The teeth have various shapes to help shifting. Take a look at any modern bike -- all the chainrings look "worn". If you had really broken or worn out a chainring, you'd feel it while pedalling -- the chain would be slipping like crazy, and I doubt you'd make it down the block.

Well without any experience I had no clue this was bad. I just crank along and shift whenever necessary. I will take more care from now on. Thanks for the help... noob mistake.
