Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best cycling songs

I'm gonna buy a trainer and would like to put together a song mix to listen to while I use it. What are some fav/motivational songs (R&R preferably)? Cycling "related" gets bonus points.

One comes to mind:

Queen - "I want to break free" (Queen - "I want to ride my bicycle" is just too obvious)

My musical taste may not be yours - but here goes a list of stuff I like:

Warm-up: Stone Roses, "Tears", " Fools Gold" "One love" close with I wanna be adored" I'm a big fan of the UK sound, so it always works for any occasion.
For normal riding:
Stone Roses - Begging you, "sally cinnimon"

Ian Brown "Dolphins are monkeys" - the UNKLE remix,
Oasis " Supersonic", and for my big sprints "Bring it on down",

Rush - can't go wrong with Rush.

If you really want more let me know and I'll get you a list. I'll burn you a cd or two if you want.

any Zepplin song. Deep Purple, Guns 'n Roses, Blues Brothers...anything with a good beat. preferably a quick beat. I work with a guy that listens to classical music when he runs. Anything you enjoy that helps keep you motivated/mind off of the pain.

I was going to say... I don't know what that song was about, but I think that it was probably about something else...

Any older Metallica stuff....

Godsmack...

And my favorite song, "Hey Man (Nice Shot)" by Filter. "Dragula" by Rob Zombie has a good riding tempo.

No way - best climbing song is "Hurt" by Johnny Cash:

I hurt myself today,
To see if I could feel.
I focus on the pain,
It's the only thing that's real.

Brings to mind, 'Chariots of Fire'. It's difficult for me to listen to that song and not go for a run... and I really don't like to run

I can think of a bunch of general pump-me-up songs, but one good one for cycling would be Going the Distance by Cake (I didn't transcribe the lyrics myself, and I tried to fix all the typos/misspellings in this version, but I may have missed some). Just substitute "riding" for "driving"....

Reluctantly crouched at the starting line,
Engines pumping and thumping in time.
The green light flashes, the flags go up,
Churning and burning, they yearn for the cup.

They deftly maneuver and muscle for rank,
Fuel burning fast on an empty tank,
Reckless and wild they pour thru the turns,
Their prowess is potent and secretly stern.

As they speed thru the finish the flags go down.
The fans get up, and get out of town.
The arena is empty except for one man,
Still driving and striving as fast as he can

The sun has gone down and the moon has come up,
And long ago somebody left with the cup,
But he's driving and striving and hugging the turns,
And thinking of someone for whom he still burns.

He's going the distance.
He's going for speed.
She's all alone, all alone in her time of need.

Because he's racing and pacing and plotting the course,
He's fighting and biting and riding on his horse.
He's going the distance.

Yeah!

No trophy, no flowers, no flash bulbs, no wine.
He's haunted by something he cannot define.
Bowel shaking earthquakes of doubt and remorse,
Assail him, impale him with monster truck force.
In his mind he's still driving, still making the grade.
She's hoping time that her memories will fade,
Cause he's racing and pacing and plotting the course,
He's fighting and biting and riding on his horse.

The sun has gone down and the moon has come up,
And long ago somebody left with the cup.
But he's striving and driving and hugging the turns,
And thinking of someone for whom he still burns.

Cause he's going the distance.
He's going for speed.
She's all alone, all alone in her time of need.

Because he's racing and pacing and plotting the course,
He's figting and biting and riding on his horse,
He's racing and pacing and plotting the course,
He's figting and biting and riding on his horse!

He's going the distance.
He's going for speed.
He's going the distance...
