Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Who is Tougher? Floyd Landis or Tyler Hamilton?

Hamilton's broken collarbone in the 2003 TDF.... or Floyd riding this years tour with his dying hip?

Personally, I think it would be harder being in Floyd's situation. Not only having the constant pain, but also worrying if this might be the last year you race as a pro (if the hip replacement doesn't go well).

I've ridden with a broken collar bone before, and later with a broken hip.

The collar bone hurt a lot more. Every bump produced a sharp pain.

My vote goes for Tyler, doper that he is.

I see how that could be VERY painful..... but I think Floyd has a lot more riding on his injury then Tyler. A broken collarbone will take you out of the tour.. but not end your career. Floyd is not only physically tough but he is mentally tough to hide this for two years and still compete at such a high level.

Hoping for Floyd in Paris!

Tyler right now, but if Floyd stays competitive deep in the Tour I'll probably change my vote. How 'bout Stewie O'Grady with his cracked vertebrae?

It always pains me to see basketball, football, and baseball players making such mad sums of money (it's not their fault people will pay them that much) while generally being pansies. Yet athletes like cyclists, hockey players (Doug Weight needed a cortisone shot just to lift the Stanley Cup!) and such play with more injuries and get paid far less. There are a few exceptions, but generally this appears to be the case.

Life just isn't fair!!

Floyd rides down mountains with no tires...Floyd had to milk chickens and pluck cows on his Mennonite farm until 3 am THEN ride his bike 500 miles before raising a barn...Floyd has poor choices of eyewear...Floyd had to race his first road bike in argyle socks and a 56 tooth ring...Floyd has to suffer the inanities of man-child Dave Zabriskie while he Dupree's it at his house...

finally...

Floyd has to ride those crappy BMC bikes all day.

Tyler. Floyd said the pain doesn't bother him that much. Tyler ground his teeth down past the nerves because the pain was so bad (had to get them capped).

That may mean that Tyler couldn't handle the pain. For Floyd's injury to go un-noitced by other cyclists, and even the Phonak doctors that takes a lot of hiding the pain.

Hockey players? Are you kidding me? They are WAY overpaid considering their limited appeal. The median salary for an NHL player is about the same, if not more, as a top pro cyclist!

Hell, hockey is such a minority sport they have it on OLN!

Floyd.

I watched my dad attempt to walk with a similar hip conditon (bone was deteriorating...) before his surgery. He never admitted to any pain in his life before then.

If Landis finishes top 5 it would be incredible. If he makes the podium every rider & race fan should BOW DOWN.

Do you have access to some time travel device that tells you what Floyd is doing in the Alps this year??? Last I checked Dax was not an alpine location...

It's Floyd. No question. I'm sure TH's steroids helped him deal with the pain...

Where is the definitive proof that TH was using steroids during the '03 TdF?

I realize that The Tour is a French event, and Napoleonic law may apply, but I'll err on the side of caution and consider him innocent until proven guilty as far as the 2003 TdF goes.

Just sayin'

Over paid? Playing hockey is like doing cycling intervals every game And you have to keep your head up. Most are paid accordingly, some are over paid.

Minority Sport? depends what side of the pond you live in. CBC, TSN and OLN here, the Hockey Channel not withstanding

That said, I would say Hamilton, untill Landis finishes.

Actually - i think it depends on what side of the border you live on.

30+ million Canadians and some folk from New England and the Mid-West does not a Major Sport make.
