Vredenstein Fortezza problems?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Vredenstein Fortezza problems?

Has anyone besides me had problems with Vredenstein Fortezza's blowing off the rim when inflating? I went through 3 new tubes before I gave up on mounting them. I figured they might have been just a tad too large for my rims (Bonty Racelite), but I gave them to my buddy and he's had the same problem on his Shimano rims. WTF?

I am riding a pair and had no issues mounting or otherwise...Mine were pretty tough to get on the rim in the first place...no hint of coming off.

Both my buddy and I both were able to mount them without tools - they went on fairly easy. Could be the difference there.

Me too!

Hah! I had it happen too a couple of weeks ago, but attributed it to my newbie-hood since this was the first time I changed a 23C road tire. I have Shimano WH-R550 wheels and eventually got the Fortezzas to sit properly after a couple of trial and errors. Once I got the tire all the way onto the rim (with the tube inflated to ~20psi) I gradually worked my way around the tire while using my thumbs to really push the sides of the tire downward into the rim. This seemed to work and thanks to a flat I was "fortunate" enough to re-test this strategy with success...

cheers,
Dan

No problems and had them around 400 miles so far. Awesome tires in my opinion.

I've had this problem on occasion. I like the tires just fine, I may try out some Rubino's soon though.

My Fortezza's went on fairly easily but not so easy that they blew off the rims when inflated and I had them on Shimano WH-550 rims for reference. Sounds like a quality control problem which happens to the best. Take them back for a warranty replacement.

Regards, Anthony

Yeah, happened to me, they fit too loose (on MAVIC Open Pro rims). I also had a defect in the casing that caused a bump.
My first set was my last.

inflate the tubes a litt;e - 10 psi or so and then go around the tire pressing it into rims to seat the beads. You will likely hear some sounds as the bead seats. Then inflate the tire to 110 or whatever is right for your weight.

No problem here - I really like them. They were tough to get on my 700 x 23s.

Love mine, allways thought about Tufos ..... have not had any problems with the Vreds over 1/m miles .. so far. Seem to have been a great tire.

I've been using them for years. I've gotten them on Mavic Open Pro's, Velocity Aerohead and Campy Eurus rims. Never had a tire blow off during inflation. I didn't think they were all that hard to get on, even on my Eurus rims (and Campy rims are infamous for being impossible to mount). Are you using the wire-bead version or the fold-able version? I always use the foldable version because they're easier to store.

Are you using the Fortezza SEs (they're black and blue)? The regular Fortezzas are great tires from what I've heard, but the SEs suck big floppy donkey d!ck.

Vredestine

You are not pumping them to 165 psi (or whatever the max pressure is) are you? That would probably do it. There is no reason to pump a tire that high.

I ride the SEs and like them just fine. I bought them after I had a pair of Michelins that neither I nor our mechanic could get to seat, which disappointed me because the previous pair had been great. Happy with my blue & blacks though. Running on the cheapest rims known to roadie-kind, DA-16s, I ride 120 in the rear and 115 in the front.

I've had mine for about 2,000 miles on my Bonty Race Lites with no issues.
I'm planning to change them real soon though.

I have a pair of the folding Ricorsos. They are too loose on an Alex RP15F rim; it’s usually a pretty bad experience getting them on there. More than half of the time they blow off. Now I usually put about 80psi in them initially, ride a block or two and then get them up to full pressure. This seems to work. On my Alex DA28 they fit perfect. Not a pain to get on but they have never blown off.

Its definitely the rim size that makes a difference in my case.

I'm happy with my Veloflex Corsa's. I think I'll just send 'em back to Performance for a credit.

I had a problem with the cheaper Vredesteins never sitting round (enough) on the rim, even when new, so I guess that means the tyre was slightly too loose?

I like the TriComps and the Super Lights, but I reckon the cheaper ones are pretty crappy.
I had a cheap, wire-beaded Fortezza, that was the worst tyre I've had in about 10 years!!

I've got my second set of them on my Shimano 550's. Never had a problem and I run them around 140. They were an absolute $#%@& to get on the first time. I like the tires a lot!

I've got over 1800 miles on my Fortezzas with zero problems. They were OEM on the bike I bought last year. The tread is almost gone, I'll be replacing them some time this summer.
