The Forbidden Nectar of Closed Road Climbs
There is a climb in my area which is amazing, no one is around, its 2k over about 5 miles, and there is zero traffic. Its in a desert canyon and its one of the rare times you can escape from society in Southern California. The problem is it's gated off and there is a 'No Trespassing' sign marked in front. Its blocked by the California Dept of Forestry and I think is off limits because its part of the aqueduct, not too sure.
Anyway, I'm very tempted to jump this gate and finish the 1k to the summit. Anyone try this in another area and would they even care if I just went up it to cycle?

That sounds too tempting to resist. If you were caught, I would bet that the worst they'd do is tell you to leave and warn you not to come back. But then again, they could arrest you for trespassing. Is trespassing a misdemeanor where you live?

This is easy... Find a trail (or make one) that bypasses the signs so you can honestly tell the judge there was no sign where you entered the "suppossedly" restricted area.
Many states are locking up natural areas or forestry roads due to the illegal planting and chemistry labs as well as attacks of hikers on remote trails and teen drinking parties. It's a crying shame, it is!

I was at home in Pensacola, Florida for the 4th of July and I took a ride out on the Beach. The road to Ft. Pickens is closed due to the road not being there from Hurricane Ivan but also because there are nesting shorebirds. Lets just say the shorebirds made me thinking again before ever crossing a barrier again. They dive bombed the hell out of me and my head for about 3 miles....I didn't know it was possible to ride 20 mph into a strong headwind!!

There's a closed road in Ventura County, CA that has tempted me.
According to https://www.toporoute.com/cgi-bin/get...AWNKGLYEOIEGRD , there's a .75 mile portion that has an average grade of about 22% -- click the 'Distance/Elevation' button and look at the elevation gain from mile 4 to mile 4.75.
I doubt this portion is paved, but I'm tempted to find out.

I'd give it a whirl with two things in mind:
1)You may not have an easy time getting any kind of help should you need it.
2) you might need it for the same reason they closed the road.

Plausible deniability? Does it look like the sign could be just blocking cars on the road? I think have a good story in mind and just go for... just try to check in advance what's out there. If homeland security wants to throw whatever book they write at you they can and will.
Otherwise, get in your biking gear, stay on marked paths and deny deny deny.

You guys are so entertaining with some of the comments posted. I keep laughing. Why don't you just take someone with you so that a) if there are mountain lions or aliens, one of you might make it to help in time to save the other; and b) you can both argue your way out of any wrist-slapping you might receive from the authorities policing the area should you get caught. I've tried a couple of times with a group to get up Hwy 39 to Crystal Lake and got caught each time. They just tsk-tsked us, threatened fines and sent us the opposite direction. Finally, we got passed them and up to the top. Nothing ate us or even threatened us for that matter and I felt like a cool rebel. And that's pretty sad considering that in reality, I'm just a bike geek! If you do decide to do it, be safe riding.

Pull the sign off the road and throw it in a ditch. Then you can say you didn't know the road was closed if anybody asks.

The old road over Loveland Pass on an off-season weekday is good since the tunnel was put through. Set my standard bike speed record there. And later passed a semi going downhill. Guess he had a cargo that could not go through the tunnel.

I'm not sure Art Bell is a cyclist though, so unless he can beam himself up to the top, I doubt he'll make it as guest speaker.

of course, and playing off of DrPete's statement about Area51, if it's restricted for some covert gov't reason, your research might be misleading....
