Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I feel better now. The bad thing is I am running my wheelset with a 12-23...lol. I'm gonna suffer like a dog. Planning on doing the full route, minus that stupid 'warmup' lap thing. So it will be like 95 miles I think.

Jakey, what are you running? 9 or 10 speed? Campy or Shimano? I have a spare 9 speed 12-27, or spare 12-25 10 speed, both Shimano.

holy crap, have fun you guys. I wish I could join you!

I would do more of these hard slogs, but the recovery time kills me. STP was really pushing it. I did the wed crit last night, and suffered the worst yet on the bike. 10 laps of two 180 degree turns per lap ended up being about 20 zero to 25 mph accelerations that destroyed me. Killer. Looking forward to the ride report.

I'm going to organize the first annual Portland bike forum August century middle of august or thereabouts. Details to come.

Doesn't matter when you do it, I don't think I can make it. I think I already have a century planned for every weekend in august..lol. Unless of course you do it on the 12th...cause well....any excuse not to do the torture 10k is a good excuse in my book.

It will be the 19th or 26th. I'm thinking this route start out in Carlton then out on meadow lake into the coast mountains back into willamina, skirt east of mcminnville, back into Carlton. 80 miles, with prolly 6-7000 feet of climbing.

https://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=325411

I'm riding most of it this weekend. My buddy says there is one short gravel section on meadow lake that I will check out.

Thank you Jakey for the advice on taking the opening 12 miles easy, and making sure to refuel at the top. Much appreciated.

I stopped at the ADA headquarters today, and asked about the showers. You need some coins to make them work. They said they will have a vehicle take a small bag with clothes to the finish, so we don't have to be bare assed after the shower.

Nice. Although I hate public showers more than just about anything...but eh.. it will probably feel good... unless there are like 500 people using them...then its just throw some clothes and deodorant on Make 'em suffer on the bus ride...lol

Damn... missed it again as Saturday is already spoken for and can't get out of it. It's gonna be perfect weather for this.
Anyone know if they allow recumbent trikes? I don't see anything on rules on the web site. I'd love to plan for this next year.

I missed a turn, so 101.4 miles in 8 hours (pretty darn slow). This was my fourth century, and by far the most challenging. Even though it took me forever to finish, it is the single ride I am most proud of. My major goal was to get to Timberline, and then just keep going if things were working.

One of the most impressive parts of this ride for me is the raw strength of so many men and women I saw out there today, both young and old, large and small. Wow! I tip my hat to you all.

All in all, an awesome, inspiring course! I will be back.

I rode with Fishmel. Needless to say I hurt. My knee was bothering me, so I didn't complete the full century. 71 miles in 4:12.

Thanks to Fishmel for holding back for as long as he did, it was great to have someone else to ride with, and while I was a little slow up the hills (by his standards, cause he's the only guy that passed me!) we absoloutely FLEW downhill. I think we maintained 30+ mph for like 10 miles. t'was awesome.

Next up...Blackberry Bramble.

If I could catch a from Eugene to Portland with anyone next Sunday, I could do blackberry bramble (I have a ride there, just not back). I've always wanted to ride wolf creek, etc. Anyone from PDX headin there?

Nice work people. I ended up at doing the metric with Portland Velo. They put on a pretty good event. I still hate Hagg Lake.

* Average Speed - 18.3
* Climbing Elevation - 3,594
* Total Miles - 64.60
* Riding Time - 3:31:47

Did anyone get the total elevation for the 100 miles? My time was 6hr 49 min. Gravel on the corners mixed with the wind made for interesting descent down to Rowena.

According to the site, it was 9501, but that doesn't include the new "detour" section up to the tunnels.

My computer showed 10,374 ft. I was curious how close it was with the new detour.

By far the best supported century I have done so far in my short cycling career. The rest stops were amazing with the amount of good food, drink, and attitudes of the volunteers. Jakey was an animal, pounding out mile after mile with a really bad knee. The ride itself lived up to its name, Fire and Ice, as we started in a nice cold cloud from Welches to Government camp. Climbed above the clouds to Timberline, and nearly froze to death at the rest stop and all the way back down to Hwy 26 at @ 40mph. The winds and that mean little hill out of Rowena were wicked, and the finish line party was really nice. Loved the two free beers at the end .

101.76 miles
6:05 in the saddle
Little over 9,000ft of climbing.

This is one fun and challenging century.
