Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

SDRider's Lemond - appreciation thread

one of the most 'proper' looking bikes I've seen lately

SDRider, do you have anymore pics?

I just emailed this pic to my brother (I'm trying to talk him into getting one of those 853 Lemonds from 2001/2002/2003)--such nice frames, and the graphics aren't cheesy (like most bikes)

the color, the white panels, handbuilt wheels with silver rims and spokes, campy gruppo, silver brake/shift levers, quill stem, setback post, arione, etc, etc, etc

Lets see...

steel-check
campy-check
traditional wheels-check

Yep...that is one nice looking bike. I love the good old steel Lemonds. I had a BA a few years ago (now on a Gunnar Roadie), my brother rides a Sarthe and my dad rides a Croix de Fer.

That ain't no carbon seatpost!!!

It's a Campy Ti Record seatpost. They don't make those anymore. I had to buy that sucker used on ebay!

Thanks for all the compliments. It was a labor of love and I do love riding it!

Wiki LeMond and you'll see a pic of the frame right after I got it back from paint sitting on my bike stand in my home office. BTW-That isn't a stock LeMond paint color. I bought the frame on ebay. It is a 2001 LeMond Zurich. It was all scratched and very poorly touched up when I took delivery of it so I decided to have it completely repainted. I chose Cyclart to do the work since they are only a block from where I work. It took about 3 months but it came out perfect. I chose the color, the white panels, the font and the world bands.

Edit-The fork is CF (stock). I had it painted to match the rest of the bike though because I thought it would better match the traditional look of the bike.

That's not a factory available paintjob though, is it? I don't remember any of them looking like that... very nice though.

No, it's not. I didn't like any of the colors I've seen on recent LeMond bikes so I chose one that I liked. I wanted the look of the bike to be recognizeable as a LeMond though so I opted for the white panels and more modern cursive font they used in the last few years. The bike originally was blue with white panels and block red letters. Too much color...too much contrast. I also had them leave out the logos on the seat stays and fork.

Yes, that is a fine looking bike. Well done SDRider!

I'm going to have a traditional wheelset built for my Lemond also.
