Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Look at the Keo Classics and I think you will find what your looking for. They are under $100.00 and only weigh a few grams more than the Sprints. I have used them and have had no problems in about 4,000 miles of use

I have broken three KEO cleats since November, but still am very happy with them.

Wow...any ideas on how or why? Like I said I have thousands of miles on mine and I am still on the original grey cleats. Wonder what is causing your issues

I have heard of the KEO cleats being less durable (they advocate frequent checking for wear), but they appear to be a very well designed new iteration of a proven sucess in pedal technology.

Yes, there is definantly a difference. I upgraded from A3.1's to Keo Carbon Cr-Mo's(yes, a little more extreme change than what you are talking about), and definantly feel a difference when I engage my cleat, and when I sprint(old cleats felt like they were a little loose mabye though)

200 miles a week, training ,riding, racing. The cleats are very light and I gues I just wear them out.

The very first thing you'll notice is that your wallet is about $140 lighter I've never used them (the keo line) but I think you'll also notice that they look nicer than the cheaper ones.
