Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Carbon cages top my list.

I went to the LBS with my ex-gf, when she asked why the plastic bottle holder cost $30, I told her it's CF.
She let out a blood curling laugh, everybody at the shop turned around.

Most overated is the actual bike. Once you get in shape, you can just sit at the coffee shop in your kit, relax, enjoy conversations, meet new people, and dont have to worry about bending rims, wearing out cogs, what is light, what is heavy. You dont wear out those 200 dollar assos bibs. etc. (stick to non-fat lattee's. or you will find you actually have to get on a bike again)

While I agree that CF cages are the single most over-rated accessory in cycling, I have been wondering about cycling socks. I am a diabetic who has had my two outer toes on my left foot amputated, so naturally I am very careful now where my feet are concerned. I do remember being told that I should wear either diabetic-specific socks or plain white cotton socks, which seems to make sense I guess. I have about 4 pairs of cycling socks and I just cannot get my feet to feel comfortable in them. They all put too much pressure around my lower leg and ankles. Are there any of you who would know of any socks that would keep my feet dry but not constrict my blood flow? I have looked but was unable to find anything to suit my needs.

Many thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Brian

Brian,

While I'm not a diabetic, I do have serious foot problems. I used to use cotton socks all the time but they caused my heels to crack open and bleed since cotton doesn't wick moisture away.

Wool socks seem to work the best. Most of them seem to apply limited pressure to legs and ankles. Much lower pressure than anything I tried.

I have been a Type 1 diabetic for over 50 years, and share your concern for blood flow in the feet. I switched to $5 sport socks, 0% cotton from Walmart and find them much better on hot days. When it isnt hot I like my black Marmite socks; Thin yellow band around the top, 'Marmite' on the back of the heel, 'Love' on the side of one foot & 'Hate' on the other.

i'm not sure that socks are overrated as much as they're overpriced.

There is no such thing as an "Overated Cyling Accessory" They are all important to somebody somewhere....

Personally my favorite item is Spokey-Dokeys, or Playing cards held on the chain stays with clothes pins, much require accessories

No way man... I calculate that the way god intended. IN MY HEAD. It's quite simple actually. I just take in all the necessary variables: um... total weight of myself and my bike... um... velocity(ok, so I do have a computer for that), gearing, wheel and tire size, and I guess percentage grade of the place I'm currently riding (I get that from the myriad maps I carry with me at all times). Like I said, simple
