Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New bike for a super-clyde

OK...first post (so please be nice)

I am looking for a new bike. I have an old 90's era Trek 1200 that is in need of repair. I have decided to just replace it. I already have a new 36 spoke custom wheel for the rear that I will move over to the new bike.

Option #1
New Trek 1200

Option #2
Specialized Allez Sport

The price is about the same. I am looking for some advice. Thanks!

Get the Specialized. The more relaxed geometry will be more comfortable for you.

If it's just between those two, then I'd say go with the Allez, as that's the model I have. Is it appropriate for a clyde? I don't know... have you considered a steel ride?

I started riding my 2005 Allez Sport when I weighed at 303. I am now down to 277. I have had no problems with the bike except for the rear wheel. I started breaking spokes about a month ago and had to buy a new wheelset. Other then that the bike has done super.

I found that Alpha ALU frame on the Trek 1200 to be light and comfortable. It isn't a harsh ride at all. The carbon fork is very nice at this price point. Mine came stock with a 105 rear deraileeur...which worked well with the Tiagra shifters.

I upgraded my wheels at time of purchase to Bontrager Race Lites...so I never tried out those stock wheels. I also upgraded my brakes to 105(black) at purchase. Today, one year later, the bike has full Ultegra 10(double) groupset and FSA carbon K-Wing handlebars. The frame is great. I'm now at 19lbs with pedals.
