Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

An incredible adventure to follow

A good friend of mine sent me an e-mail outlining his nephew's plans to bike across the country. He is a very articulate young man and has set up a website where the adventure can be cronicled as often as possible. I thought it might be a good read as we follow him across america so I am including a link to his sight. It is: www.thegaba.com .

A family friend graduated from high school last year in Boston and decided to take a year off before heading to college. He spent 2 months this winter teaching conversational English in Shanghai, China. After he finished the teaching job, he rented a mountain bike and rode it from the Pacific Ocean to Tibet (1500 miles in 6 weeks, mostly uphill). This was mostly a solo trip, though he did meet other tourists along the way. He tried to stick the main roads, but otherwise did not have a planned itinerary. He's a white kid and didn't speak any Chinese before he started the teaching job. I wish I was that energetic and adventerous when I was a kid.

I think in most parts of the world, the rural people are very friendly and helpful to travellers. They work hard at their farms and mostly have no clue about world politics.

Here's their diary entry for day 2:

Saturday, August 05, 2006, 21:21

DAY 2

We are in Mechanicsville in Virginia, making better mileage than we thought we would despite the scoudering heat. We saw a few other people finishing the transamerican trail coming the opposite direction and explained the complications of the Appalachian mountains...

Would any of you try an unsupported trip across country like these two guys? Not me!!!!

Their Website is: www.thegaba.com

Show em some love and at least sign their guest book!

They're riding east to west? Are they completely masochistic, or just like wind?
