Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

almost got mauled, but Boonen saved me

Well, the spirit of his speed is what saved me
I was out for a ride this morning, and heard a dog start chasing me. Looked around really quickly and saw that it was behind a fence, so I decided to race it.
I pick up some speed and start to overtake it (it was a pretty fast dog with a head start) when all of the sudden it veers to the left. What the heck?? i think
it seems the owners left the gate open... the dog flies out the gate and charges across the road at me
(when they're not barking and just focusing on you, you know that you're in trouble)
so I yell "GO HOME" and think a quick "Tom Boonen, save me" (read with the voice of racing great Ricky Bobby)
It worked. I did clock the dog for a few seconds going 24 mph... pretty impressive
(in case you are wondering, my Boonen inspired sprint only got me to 27.5 mph- not too impressive)

I've learned to never race dogs unless their tiny dogs. It's not worth possibly crashing.

I once had the owner of an unleased large dog yell "Stop! My dog hates bikes!" I did stop of course. As I was dialing my cell phone, I said, "I was stopping to call animal control anyway."
