Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Dumb question, but since I am coming down from olympia, will there be free parking at the starting point, or at least paid parking that allows you to pay for multiple hours at once?

p.s. If any if you guys are from Olympia you could car-pool with me if you want.

I don't think Saturdays are free anymore. Sundays are free so you should be fine. PSU has plenty of parking around the area, so we should be good. Looks like we're going to have riders from here in all the distances. Should be pretty easy to spot me, I'll be on the ZIPP 2001. Frantically trying to glue my other tire on so... I should not be running the disc unless something tragic happens. I look forward to drinking with y'all at the finish!

I'm in, hopefully for the full 100. It will be my first century and I'm hoping that it goes well. I'm thinking slow and steady, or at least drafting off of Chisholm for as long as possible.

My wife and I are getting back into riding after a 10 year hiatus, and will be doing the 60miler. Look for two 6'2" riders; one on a bright red FUSO frame w/7sp DA, and a large, psychadelic yellow/orange Klein that cannot be missed. Make sure to wear your sunglasses.

I'll be wearing my traffic friendly Southpark "You Suck" jersey to make friends of the motorists... :-)

Sweet, maybe I'll be able to keep up until the hills then.

I'll probably be down there by 7:15. Big-Bird yellow Trek (for those who don't know me)...currently sporting some serious wheel bling (thanks to Rad).

My first as well. It took the offer of coffee and beer to make me do it.

Let's see, what do I get to do tomorrow?

Loews, Office Depot, Target, back to Mom's to build some patio furniture, change out filter fans, clean the attic, sweep the pool, computer stuff. Rinse and repeat on Sunday. Ahhhh, so much fun to come to L.A..

Enjoy the ride lads.

I think I might be out for the ride tomorrow. I have this bump on my back that got infected a couple of weeks ago. It got huge in the last few days (think the alien scene where the thing pops out of that guys stomach) so I have been taking some antibiotic. Yesterday I woke up with a high fever and ended up at Kaiser getting my alien bump drained and then having a drainage plug/tube put in.

The doctor said that riding would not be a great idea if I sweat a lot, but I am thinking that I might be able to start the ride and see how it feels. Starting at 8:00 on a forecasted 95 degree day doesn't sound sweat-free.

So, I am most likely out for the century but I am still planning on meeting you guys tomorrow morning. I can't resist that free breakfast!

Maybe you should do the 40-miler with me and a friend. I'm "SURE" that it won't be fast enough for you to get too much of a sweat over. If you don't ride, maybe you can keep an eye on the beer for us till we get back

Don't think I will be there early enough for breakfast. But I will be there 7:30-45 for packet pickup and start of ride.

I can't say for sure, but I might be there. No guarantees except that I'll be slow...

I just saw on the news that the Hawthorne Bridge will be closed from 8am until 2pm...could be a total cluster. Plan accordingly.

I concur, but I had bigger issues to deal with. Can you say BONKUS MAXIMUS?! Aside form lower back cramps, dual thigh cramps, total lack or preparation and a number of other small irritants, this ride was a total disaster for me. I have never had a worse ride. I'll take it as a learning experience.

Dtrain, how did you guys do?!

OK, This is the first organized century (60m for me) I've done in 10 years. It was fun just to be on the road with so many other bikes.

However, I will say that the ride could have been better organized.

- route markings were sketchy.
- lots of start stop / bike path navigation the first 20 miles or so.
- poorly marked rest areas! I, and many others missed the second stop and had to limp back to the start w/o any water. Dehydrated and bonked made the last 10 miles unfun.
- food was good at the end
- coffee and beer giveaways; 2 of the 3 primary food groups (chocolate for the trifecta).
- start was interesting; Hawthorne bridge closed; looped around on the Steel bridge.

All in all, I'm sure not perfect, but my wife and I had a blast.

We just started riding again after a decade layoff, and only have about 10 weeks in the saddle, with our longest ride before today being 30m. 60m was probably too big a jump; I ended up crawling the last 10 miles. But as I sit in the comfort of my airconditioned house, and my mind begins to enhance the positive experiences, and cloud the negitive, I'm sure I'll look back on this as a rousing success :-)

P.S. - It was nice to meet a fellow BF'er; Bernie introduced himself. Guess my obnoxious jersey did work..

I agree. I didn't get any food until the last rest stop which was 71 miles into the ride. Each rest stop seemed to be running out by the time I got there. So I was border line for bonking. Energy was way low. Road markings kinda sucked. Me and several other people missed a couple of turns. No porta podies at a couple of the rest stops seemed a little odd to me. Other than they didn't plan for so many people it was still a fun slow century that allowed me to see alot of different parts of the city that I don't normally get to.

dtrain, PedalMasher & others sorry I didn't see all of you at the start. Showed at 7:40 and spent 45 min. + in line to pick up my packet.

Were you the guy who was pulling everyone? Some really strong cyclist motored by, and everyone jumped on his wheel for 5 miles or so; In the end I still got spit out the back...

There were some strong freight trains around that part of the ride. Motivation to train more...
