Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Have any of you tried a unicycle?

There is an LBS owner here who built a giant unicycle and he can ride something like 20 mph on the flats. He even climbed Mt. Charleston on the sucker!

Anybody here ever try a unicycle? They look hard to master...

Jebus. You are like the poll/question master.

Like the pilot in the movie "Airplane".

"You ever seen a grown man naked?"

"Do you like movies about gladiators?"

Not a bad thing, but just sayin.

Yes, as a matter of fact, I just bought a unicycle a couple of months ago and taught myself how to ride it. It wasn't that hard. After spending about an hour a day for 3 or 4 days I could prettty much go a block or two without stopping. I finally had the chance to talk to another unicyclist when I was in Texas (I highly recommend stopping at Richardson Bike Mart if you ever in the DFW area - an amazing place - the place was so big they even had a unicycle section) and he showed me the trick to mounting it. Until then I had to grab a wall, sign post, or fence to get up on it. After I master the mounting thing, the next trick is learning to "idle", which is coming to a stop and rolling back and forth in place. Kinda like a more dynamic track stand. Anyway, yes it is a fixed gear. But one word of warning - all of your weight is on your crotch area (duh). And smaller wheels are easier to learn on but have a lower top speed. (I bought a Torker LX unicycle with a 26" wheel. It is reasonably priced and relatively tough and I would recommend it to beginners - your LBS can get it through Seattle Bike Supply).

I learned when I was about 12 and had a few of them as a kid. I had not been on one for 30 years and a short time back saw one at a LBS and asked if I could take it out for a spin. Just like riding a bike......

I'm proud of my fat juicer.

As for unicycles... My chiropractor won't let me on a snowboard due to my "need for speed" and I can't imagine a uni would be any safer.

How do you dial it up to 400 on one of those things anyways?

Well, I already know how to juggle so learning to ride a unicycle is the next logical step...

My best friend in high school was able to ride a uni for or aft while juggling or twirling two batons. I can't do any of it.

I'm dying to get a unicycle - I just missed out on a used one for sale on Craigslist for 20 bucks.

There are people in the world who play Unicycle Hockey, and I want to be one of them.

The guy you are referring to is awsome on a unicycle!!! He even commutes on that thing. He almost had me convinced to by one but I chickened out at the last minute. I may get one this winter to play around on.

Saw a thing on tv - these guys were having an annual motorized unicycle (unibike?) race. One guy had a unibike w/ a 4 cyl car engine on it.

I saw a whole family on an organized century (the metric route) on those things. Looked like 29" MTB wheels under 'em. It puts the whole new spin on the low maintenance schtick the fixie crowd goes on about.

There's a kid at the University of Rochester who bombs down hills at about 30 on his uni, then seems to have no fear cornering at 20-25 mph. It's awesome.

Strong work on the last two threads>>>You've consecutivly posted threads on a nubile young bike racer whom the BFr's have decided needs a "hot beef injection", and poll about riding a unicycle. Brilliant. . .You are now now my new favorite poster on the forums.

When I lived in Seattle, I remember some crazy dude downtown that would commute everyday on a unicycle. He passed me while I was walking once and scared the crap out of me.

Your being facetious right?

Everybody else thinks I'm wack - I basically have a crazy heavy metal musician's mind. Just started cycling year ago...
