I almost got creamed today (and it was my fault)
I read so many posts here about negligent drivers creaming cyclists its depressing. Sometimes its not thier fault. Sometimes cyclists get a little to cozy on the road, as I did today...
Today I was hammering up a less travelled road towards the east. I heard a car approach and looked back. I barely saw the car approach and pass me, and I started to go into the road for a left turn. Since I was riding at dusk and behind me was the sunset, I did not notice that a second car was right behind the first. Even with sunglasses on I couldn't see well. The only reason I didn't get creamed was that I heard the engine...the sunset completely blinded me from seeing that car.
Anyway, just wanted to pass it on...be safe and dont be too overconfident on the road.

I'm glad your safe. And thanks for validating my practice of not listening to music in the saddle for safety reasons.
Be careful!!

I nearly got creamed by four different old cars with four different young men with four different versions of why they have the right of way but they al boiled down to this: They are young, full of themselves, have a car, and the sun is out. License to Kill.

Glad to hear that you didn't get hit, and that you learned something from the experience

It always pays to be defensive regardless of whether you're operating a car, jetski, or riding a bike.
Glad you're okay and are able to tell the story.

Glad you're ok; we all need a reminder to do our part as cyclists once in awhile.
Interesting comparing the response to this thread vs. the almost got creamed by a motorist threads.
But you should see the thread on this incident over at CarForums - it's like 5 pages long.

Hey ferret...thanks for the reminder. I always ride very defensively (I need to here in New Jersey). his is quite a nice change from the "I almost got killed by a cager today' threads. It is rare, indeed, that a cyclist admits his or her fault in here.
Cheers,
Brian

for me, there has been a close call on two consecutive rides. the first was at a all way stop. i slowed, allowed those with right of way to go. when i had right of way, i started to go through the intersection, however, some 17 year old girl felt that she had right of way, looked right and made a left turn. she didn't even know i was there until i started yelling. she was probably within a few centimeters of my rear triangle. i gave her a nice piece of my mind.
then yesterday, i was coming down a decent size hill going somewhere in the 35-40 mph area. on this hill, i typically stay in the middle of the lane if traffic allows me to. (there is glass, potholes and some gravel on the right side of the road). as i'm coming down the hill, a minivan makes a left into my lane and goes about 20 mph. i got on the brakes and had to swerve pretty quickly to avoid him. as i came up to a red light, i was next to the minivan, so i politely asked the driver that if i was a car, would he have still pulled out in front of me. he wasn't to happy with that and got pretty mad pretty quick.

Great Reminder. We all make assumptions and on a bike that can be a tragic mistake.
