Cycling lesson #137: No burritos before riding

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycling lesson #137: No burritos before riding

especially if you go out on a 11 mile bike path with no facilities or commercial establishments nearby.

You'd think this would be obvious, but I had to learn from experience

Fortunately I made it back to the start place and facilities, partly out of the saddle, avoiding local brownouts.

11 miles? You need to find a new taqueria. I wouldn't think twice about eating a super burrito even with 50 miles to go.

What happened? Hit a bump and blew the back end of your saddle off?

It has more to do with the meal before the burrito. The burrito won't work its way through in 11 miles, but it will induce the gastro-colic reflex. It's a reflex that senses a full stomach and tells the colon to take the necessary steps to make room. So if you had, um, cleaned up before the maid got there you'd be fine.

I love science--- and burritos.

The combination of that and having spicy stuff brewing in one's stomach makes it a less-than-optimal pre-ride snack...for me at least. Now, post ride...

Heh. Coffee and burritos. If we were also talking about oatmeal, you'd be describing my Saturday diet.

I can't think of a better food to eat before a long ride than a Chipotle's Burrito. The Veggie Burrito is about 1100 calories. Who knows how much the meat laden one puts in your body.

Sadly, Im not kidding. When I lived in Dallas, I ate so much Chipotle that the people behind the counter knew what I wanted before I ordered it.. easily 4 days a week for a couple of years. I was absolutely addicted to the stuff.

Then I moved to NC and the closest Chipotle was in Richmond, VA which is ~150-170 miles. So for 2 years, I think I ate Chipotle maybe twice.. once when I was in Tampa for the Bill Jackson Pinellas Trail Skate and once when I went to Atlanta to get molded for custom skate boots. They've just opened one up here but it's clear across town so I only eat there about once a week.

Anyone who can eat a Chipotle burrito before a long ride, especially with the hot salsa on it is braver than I. Their hot salsa is like Liquid Plumber for your colon.

Yeah, learn your limits, and never exceed them.

I can eat just about anything before a ride. Before my MS150, I ate 2 bananas, chugged some milk, a poptart, some more milk, and then half a large pizza (cold) and a Dr. Pepper on my way to the start line. I felt great all day. But you get half a bean and cheese burrito from the Taco Hell in me, and it's skid city. No bueno.

Eh. Chipotle. Kinda like the Starbucks of burritos. Nothing terribly bad about it, but just a big chain selling the same stuff coast to coast.

Support your LBS (your Local Burrito Shop, that is)!

No doubt.. we don't have an LBS here.. we have Qdoba and now Chipotle.. there are a few ghetto establishments around here but overall GOOD mexican food is not that prevalent, especially given the mexican population here is exploding. Maybe I'm a bit spoiled as good mexican restaurents were on every corner in Texas.

I have a "Powered By Chipotle" tshirt.. wish I could get me a jersey like that

It's actually better than a lot of LBSs. But, in principle, I agree. My only complaint w/ Chipotle is that their food is SO salty. It's great after a long ride, but otherwise it's overload.

Chipotle more accurately is the McDonalds of american style mexican food. Look who controls the company.

Here's some indicators for a good LBS:

Your beverage choices include Sidral, Penafiel, horchata, and Coca-Cola mexicana (in glass bottle the way Dios intended).

Your meat choices include tripe, brains, cheeks, and sliced hotdogs.

The decor includes soccer team posters and velvet paintings of La Virgen Guadalupe, Elvis, and the Kennedys.

The clientele includes the guys from the Home Depot parking lot.
