My toes are on fire!
ok the last two rides I've done that were over 35 miles - my toes just hurt so bad I could barely pedal. The first time with a good pair of shimano road shoes, the last with my pearl izumi tri shoes.
I don't know why. Not sure if I've worn the shoes too loose, too tight, or what. I basically had to loosen them up quite a lot just to hobble home. I know if they shoes are too loose my feet will move around too much inside of them . maybe that's it. I really dont' want that to happen again...

Moving the cleats back on your shoes may help. Worked wonders for my 'hotfoot'.

A simple thing to try is to change out the shoe insert... I have had a couple pair of shoes where the insert caused my hot foot.. I found one that I liked and have them in all my cycling shoes.. The specialized bg insert..

I had some pain in my Shimano't until I replace the insole with a gellin insole. It's awesome for me.

Do you pedal with your feet flat or with your toes pointing down?

Pay attention to this. I found that on longer rides I would get a cramp or burning in the toes of my left foot. I realized that as I tired or lost concentration I would begin pointing my toes downward. Once I concentrated on keeping my feet flatter the pain disappeared.

seat position - interesting. it wasnt' as bad on my tri bike. I dont' think it's athletes foot.
I pedal with my foot level. I will try moving the cleats and getting an insert . thanks!

If it is athletes foot the aggrivation should continue even when not riding. What kind of cleats? If they are spd with little float maybe your feet are just getting tired from being in a constant position. All the suggestions make sense to me.

I always get the burn worse when I am tired and start potato mashing instead of spinning .... as soon as I remeber the right form and feather the peds a bit it helps. Also try unclicking for a few seconds if it gets real bad. That usually will relieve pain and numbness enough for me to continue.

I moved the cleats back - I also concentrated on heels down last two rides of 35 + . no more problems! I had a sprained ankle and my achilles was not as limber as usual ,therefore I was pointing the toes down . thanks for the suggestions .

Same here, move the cleats back 1/4" and see if that helps. Also, pay attention to the play in your pedal as you spin along comfortably and make sure your cleats are setup/rotated so you don't hit the 'bump stops' of the float in your pedals.

+1 on moving the cleats back. I also don't really like Shimano shoes. My Sidis are more comfortable but that's probably because I have really wide feet.

I am a newbie and am having a similar problem, however, it is that my toes are going numb after about mile ten of a ride. I have tried loosening my shoes with no improvement. It is irritating but hasn't stopped me from continuing on the ride; just less enjoyable. I have ridden my mountain bike 40 miles before and not had this problem. Anyone have any ideas on what I can do? Thanks.

Once you go to sandals, you'll never go back to shoes.
