are the alu Mavic Cosmics ok? Any feedback?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

are the alu Mavic Cosmics ok? Any feedback?

I've just borrowed some of these old alu Mavic Cosmic Pros from my local shop (they're blue, in case the pic is crap), and they feel quite good to ride. They're pretty old, so I might skip buying these, and I'm checking out the new Cosmic Elites. https://www.mavic.com/ewb_pages/p/pro...hp?gamme=route

The old Cosmic Pros have 16 spokes and are 38mm deep, so they've got to be more aero than my 28 spoke CXP30s . They ain't light: the rear is 1158g with the skewer.

Did the Cosmic Pros have any known problems?

the reviews of the Cosmic Elites aren't the best (https://www.roadbikereview.com/cat/wh..._2490crx.aspx), hence my question:
are the new ones ok?

From Mavic:

Cosmic Carbone Pro = 1580g. $2200 will get you something that weighs about a pound more than something costing the same price (or less).

Cosmic Elites = 1900g. There are many claims that the advertised weight is about 100g short of where it really is. $450 is a lot to pay for 2000g set of machine made wheels.

It's your money though. If there is a screaming deal in the alloy wheels, get em.

I picked up a set of Cosmic Elites used for $100 and they're pretty nice wheels. The person who owned them previously may have used them but they certainly look like new wheels to me.

531, I had some older Cosmics and loved them. Fast hubs and a nice feel on the road. The only reason I got rid of them was coz I changed to Campy and I would have needed to get a new hub for the rear wheel. (I believe that the newer models fit either Campy of Shimano)

I have that front wheel on my Gios. Came that way at the auction. The wheel has 5000 Km on it so far commuting winter and summer as well as 7 races. Thats what I have done, don't know what the previous owner did. It has slamed over the odd pot hole at speed and held up very well considering its use. I have never trued it. This is a robust wheel.

Maybe... I know have given props to Ksyriums before as well, so that might be confusing me. Only just sold the Cossy's about a week ago too.

hmmmm...I see. I haven't talked about price yet with the shop, but do you reckon $250 or $300 is too much?

Yep. Too much. I paid $275 cdn for my front wheel and it had a Gios attached and that had Campy stuff hanging all over it.

Honestly I reckon you'd probably have a better idea of 2nd hand pricing than me, but I had sort of thought around $200-250 for a pair. Could be completely wrong though. I bought them a few years back off a mate for $400 which was a good deal at the time.

hiromian - I think comparing Canadian & Aussie prices might be a bit apples/pears. We tend to get stooged on bike gear big time, so what may seem really exy to others may not be such a bad deal in the local market. Gotta say I'd be pretty stoked to pick up a Campy loaded Gios for CND 275 tho - sweet bikes

OOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMGGGGGGGGODDDDDD!!!

How many times must we hear about these North American bargains?

I bike like that would probably be at least $1200 AUS, which is about $920 US

They have to be more aero than what I currently have (and more so than the Sciroccos that I'm checking out), and they're the cheapest option for me at the moment.

Do you know if there's any problems with replacement parts, or anything?
The bearings are easily replaced, right?

Yea I'm still stoked. I was lucky for sure considering I have done nothing to it except bar tape, pedels and brake cables. I like the front wheel. It even, Bike wheel and all, held up in a colision with a car. The wheel looks alot better now that I have removed the deakals.

Can't say about spares or bearings since I didn't have to do anything to them. Never even had to true them up at all - and i did hit some good bumps & stuff on them. I wasn't doing massive amounts of kms like you do though.

I had to get new bearings for my Ksyrium front wheel and that cost $25 I think. Dunno if Cossies are similar costs.

As for why anyone would buy 2nd hand wheels.....coz if they are in good nick you can ge a better wheel for a lesser price I suppose.
