Some local bike shops will allow you to do parking lot test with different saddles or I found one that had a 30 day exchange policy. I ride Fizik Aliante, but everyones A$$ is different.

Fizik Aliante Carbon. The only saddle that has kept me completely numbness- and pain-free. If they stop making them I will weep.

Someone's bound to mention Brooks saddles... might as well be me. I ride a Team Pro, my buddy rides a B17. Both pretty comfortable saddles. The Team Pro (and Brooks' narrower saddles) are typically used with bikes with the handlebars below the saddle. B17 seems to work best with bars even with or above the saddle.
If you're not worried about the weight of the saddle (that is, if you aren't planning on racing) Brooks might be a good option. They're not for everyone, but, from what I've heard, they work for a lot of people. Plus, if you order from www.wallbike.com they have a 6 month guarantee on the saddles. Can't beat that.
Good luck on the saddle search.

+1 on a Brooks B17 if you don't mind the weight. For a lightweight saddle, the E3 Form Gel is working very well for me for my 35 mile long rides. For what it's worth, I'm about 210lb and medium build.

Selle San Marco ASPide (Night Train - discontinud).
I also have a few Brooks saddles, there among a quite old Pro
that's very comfortable.

Selle Italia SLR for me (the regular one...not the XP which has extra padding). By bum seems to like the harder feel. everyone is different.
Lectron how do you like that ASPide?

It's the combination between the groove and that flipped up back that really fits me.
Also, like you, i prefer a quite firm padding. The don't make the Night Train anymore, but I think the FX is more ore less the same.
An other good thing. It's not leather. Rains a lot around here
I now have 3 ASPides (Night train) to go with all my bikes, except the colnago which deserves something more time right.

I am still searching for my ideal saddle, but have tried a few of the brands/models enumerated above. One thing to keep in mind, though, is the fit of your chamois, if you are using such. I have been using the Specialized 130mm Toupe saddle for a few months now, and it has never felt just right to me, especially after 90 minutes or so. However, when I switched from one type of chamois bib shorts to my present model (PI AeroSensor), the comfort level has improved. Of course, nothing beats an ideal fitting saddle, but the interplay between saddle and chamois design is something that should not be discounted.
Take care,
T

Fizik Arione. I have tried the Arione, Specialized Avatar, and a few others. So far the Arione is my favorite. I may dive into the SLR eventually.
