Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sugino compacts

Is this Sugino compact good quality, stiff, and smooth shifting? Square taper is still what those big track riders use, right? I'm 190 lbs.

My Truvativ Rouleur GXP 50-36 has some front deraileur rub on the downstroke- can't believe it's flexing with a exo bb. My Dura-Ace never did that. I wish they made a compact (the new FC model is heavy).

I have the one that you illustrate and the "stronglight" (also Sugino but mine is 50, 36). Both work very well. Work fine with SIS. The word that I hear is that the Sugino is rather high Q but if it is, I don't notice it. I am using standard Ultegra 9sp front derailleurs with both.

You mean as in "Q" factor? They recommend a long-ish 68x110 bottom bracket.

Are you trying to set the record for the highest "new thread" count?

Yes, sorry. Q factor is supposed to be higher than the other compacts...I do not know if that is true. I switched a stock Ultegra 9sp double with a the Stronglight "impact" (sugino) and really could not tell any difference that I would relate to Q factor. I do believe that I did use 110 BB. I also have a Sugino triple on a touring bike. I cannot say anything against them. They seem to be very good values.
