Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Flightdeck is a PIA......

So I did my first Cat 5 race this weekend. It was 3 stages and I had a blast. Anywho....Once again my flightdeck computer let me down. Before the race started I made sure to look at my computer. I reset all the old readings and made sure I was in VEL screen so I would not accidently reset anything and I made sure the RPM label was blinking so I knew that it was recording my averages and miles. About halfway through the race I looked down and once again the RPM tag was not blinking. The computer had decided to go into pause. Either that or my thumb hit the button during a climb. Either way I am not to happy with this thing. Is anyone else ready to trash there Flightdecks due to these same issues or am I the only one?

I feel your pain.

I live in constant fear of inadvertently stopping stopping the Flight Deck while riding. To avoid that posibility, I have the thing set to indicate either my average speed or my cadence, but then to see (let's say) a reading of miles traveled on the ride of the day, I have to hit the left button on the back of the unit (what?) once, twice, thrice, four times, five times?

Give me a freaking break-- I just want a peak at the freaking trip odometer! After that, I need to hit five or six buttons just to get back to my safe default display of average speed or cadence.

I did have it turn off on me once, I think as soon as I turned it on. ( by turn off, I mean I hit the stop, not the sleep mode)

Anyway, the more I play with it, the easier it is to use. Of course, I dont use some of the functions, like the counter or the stopwatch.

It's actually easy to use, you guys are blowing it out of proportion!

how does the computer get data from the brifters? Do the brifters have transducers/transmitters?

It is VERY easy to use. That is not the issue. I think I am pausing the computer my simply pressing the left button while riding. I am not sure if it is that or it is just happening on its own but eitherway, it should not be that easy to set into pause mode. Who has time during a race or fast ride to look at there puter all the time to make sure it is recording. Keep in mind the Flightdeck always shows your speed so at quick glance you think it is on when it really is not.

There is a small wired switch assembly on the inside of each brifter. They wire to the head unit. I thought of clipping the wire to the left button but it is the only way to reset the old readings

yes, they do. There are wires that run from the base up to the brifters. They are easily installed at the LBS. Other than that, the unit is wireless.

you would also lose a portion of your cadence, since it wouldnt know when you switched chainrings.
