Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mountain components on beater road bike?

I'm pretty sure I should be okay, but just to double check. I've got an old generic frame that I am looking to turn into my "pull the kid on the trailer and just screw around commuter bike". I have most of the parts lying around here, but still need a few things.

I have a set of SRAM grip shifts. I want to install the rear one on a flat bar and run 9 speed rear with a single ring up front. I think I can get a SRAM rear derailleur for nothing from a friend of mine. I know that stuff would work, but will it mesh with an old 9 speed Shimano road cassette?

So it would be, SRAM grip shift and RD with a Shimano road cassette. Is there anything I'm overlooking?
Thanks.

There is no spacing differences between Shimano "road" and "mountain". Just make sure the SRAM stuff is the Shimano compatible versions, they also make stuff to a proprietry spacing.

The shifter needs to be 9-speed.

FWIW, I have a grip shift shifter on a Shimano rear derailer on my "pull-the-trailer" old bike.
