Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yes, Shill-Haters, I Won a Race on my Motobecane

Call me a shill if you want, but the following story is absolutely true.

In my first race as a Cat5 I got shelled in the first lap. I was riding a Trek 5200 at the time (with triple chain ring no less!!). But then I bought a Motobecane Le Champion SL and my life as a cyclist changed. In my second race a few weeks later, I won. So, maybe it IS about the bike.

--Steve (sorry, I couldn't help myself. I hate shill posts as much as the next guy but there's nothing good on TV tonight...)

I used to live a miserable life. I lived in a cardboard box outside the bus station. But ever since I got my Motobecane, my life has completely turned around.

I now live in a really nice wooden box.

So you think it was the bike?

Everybody gets shelled in their first race. It happened to me, then I got 15 top 5s in a row, with a win and two category upgrades. I don't blame my bike for my success.

There's nothing wrong with either bike you've raced on.

I'm going to buy a Moto just for the nice wooden box. Of course, I'll probably strip the bike and sell it for parts on Ebay, thus bringing the end price of the nice wooden box to virtually nothing.

I feel so ripped off, I just got a cardboard box with my custom Ti bike. If I had known that Moto's come shipped in wooden crates, I would have gotten that instead.

Good job! Someone who actually listened to some advice! <assuming you had experienced racers preloading your brain>

I heard all the standard advice and got too antsy, figuring I was a lot stronger than everyone else. That drove the point home for me, and I started racing a lot smarter.

i didn't really have anyone giving me advice. actually, what happened for me was i got absolutely bombed on a fast group ride a few months before. this kinda bummed me out and it made me realize i needed to work a little harder than i had been.
wasn't until later that i found out it was mostly a bunch of cat1 and 2 riders i was with that day
