Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Old car guys do it. Am I crazy for thinking about this?

Old car guys often times have two machines....a cruiser and a hot rod. One is designed for fun and daily cruising, the other is more of a speed-exclusive machine.

Well, I'm thinking about a hot rod.
It makes no sense really, I know.

But after accomplishing my goal of a century this season, I have come to realize that of the two types of riding, I prefer shorter, faster rides occasionally, with regular training rides during the week.

My thought is that I could ride my Klein for it's third season next season for the daily driver rides where comfort matters more. But then on days when I plan to just push it and ride faster, I could bring out the hot rod....perhaps something like a Bianchi Luna or some other such carbon-light, racy looking, over-priced wheels ride that just looks fast.

If I save some money over winter I could maybe buy a second bike or have one built like this come spring.

Thoughts?

Dude, go for the Pinny you so eloquently drooled over in the past. You know you want her, you know you must have her. And the wife? Well, she can sleep on the couch, right?

Patriot....you're right....the PINNY!!!

Ahhhhhh, the Pinny.

Look, everyone has to have something to throw money at.
Like I said, it's not practical, but what does that have to do with anything here, right?

I do it, and I like it. My Trek offers all day in the saddle comfort, and the Pinarello is strictly for road/ group rides and has no aerobars. My Kestrel is not comfortable, but it is fast, effortless speed for short distance triathlons.

Ya'Know, you're a guy who professes to be in love with Pinarello's, and then you mention a Bianchi??? (No dis to Bianchi's). I am appalled at you Mr. Hip, and dont think I ever want to bring my Pinny out to play with you. You know, there are some that talk the talk, but fail to walk the walk...

Watch the spinning watch, you are getting sleepy, your eyelids are getting heavier and...

I see a Paris Carbon in your future

Yes, you are crazy.

Why anyone would have a bike for road racing,

triathlons,

long relaxing rides,

and commuting?

I mean, that's just crazy talk!

There's nothing crazy about getting another bike. As a matter of fact, you'll also need to be thinking about a bike for loaded touring, another one with grocery panniers, a full-suspension mountain bike for riding trails, and a dedicated rain bike. Not to mention a cargo bike for carrying larger items. And it's a good idea to have a cyclocross bike or hardtail mountain bike if you want to ride those unpaved roads that don't really require full suspension.

You asked for it...

IMO if you're going to have more than one bike, they should be fairly distinct and used for different purposes. E.g. a beat-up old one-speed beater for commuting, and a road bike. Or, one MTB, one roadie. Or, a TT bike, and another road bike for club rides. If that's the plan, go for it. But if you're looking for two road bikes, well...

Unless you're racing, the performance differences between two road bikes will be fairly minor. You're unlikely to even notice it on a short ride. Training and losing weight from the ol' midsection will give you a better performance boost than buying a whole new (expensive) bike.

If your current bike fits and is mechanically sound but youre going to buy the super-expensive bike anyway, just do it and forget about rationalizations. You're buying it because you want a flashy bike, end of story. Use that as your regular ride, and keep your current one either as a backup, a spare, for inclement weather, or sell it off.

The red Pinarello is a beauty despite it's age. Except for the downtube shifters. What size is it? If it's a 55,56 or 57cm, I think you should buy a new one and ship that to my address, which I'll PM you!

Dude, that red Pinarello is a mere 30-40 mins down I-95 from you. Why don't you drive down and pick it up yourself.

I just don't think a Mystic Velo kit would really match it.

I am going to throw a curveball into this discussion. Since Hip lives in Wisconsin he could go directly to the source of Waterfords and have them build a custom bike that would be uber-OCP. Well, not quite as hyper-OCP as a Vanilla or a custom IF or Calfee, but WAY up there.

Yeah, but you's be not understanding the Hipster. He's not in it just for the money and speed. He's in it for the class as well. Oh, the Vanity.
