Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

just got back from a ride...stupid woman

so i biked about 15 miles into downtown miami and i was on my way home being the perfect law abiding bicyclist when some woman beeped at me and raised her fists at me. i pulled up beside her at the light and politely signalled for her to roll down her window. she did and i said 'may i ask why you beeped at me?', to which she replied "ya yayayayaya ya ya ya" which is what it sounded like to me since it was in spanish. then i said 'who was the first president of the united states of america?'. to which she replied 'eh yorg bush father'. i started to laugh and then i said 'are you serious'. she goes 'eh i am from spain'. then i said 'congratulations, but what does that have to do with you living in the US and not knowing who george washington is?' she had this 'wtf'' look on her face as the light turned green and i pedaled away laughing. hahaha i dont even know what inspired me to do that, i dont usually have a problem with people speaking spanish since i'm in miami, but since she couldnt tell me what she thought i had done wrong in english i couldnt help but fool around with her.

That's ok. Surveys were done on average english speaking, born and raised "Americans" walking down the streets of New York. Almost 90% could not tell us who the Vice President was, and more people were able to recognize a picture of Cap'n Crunch than Al Gore. Pretty sad.

Maybe our politicians should start wearing snappy costumes to help us with our memories.

A more definite way to remember each President would be to have a national holiday for each and every one of them...

In WW2 instead of the standard challenge word and response they asked, "What is the third line in the star spangled banner?"

Anyone who answered correctly must be a german in allied clothing

Well for fun I asked everyone at work who the vice president was absolutely no one outside of one of my leads and my manager knew the answer, it was so sad that I then asked who the president was and many of them couldn't answer that. One person actually answered Al Gorge. That's right, Gorge.
All of these people were english speaking Americans, some young and some in their 30-40's.
