Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How long is your average ride?

Just wondering. I'm still a newbie on the road and I do 20-25 miles on average with a longer one on the weekend. Just wondering what the norm is. Well?

I'm about the same. That is all I have time for during the week. I wish I could go longer but I have other things to do. Weekends are longer rides. 30 to 50 if I can get the time. Wife and 2 kids take a lot of time. My wife does ride with me a lot.

Wife and two kids myself but I work from home and the kids are in school. Guess I'm kinda lucky that way.

A lot of non-cycling friends ask me this and I never know what to tell them. I'm always switching things around. My shortest ride is my 12 mile round trip to the store (which I do as recovery on the trusty beater) and on the long side I try to get in at least 2 centuries a month. Everything else is just random based on how I feel, how much time I have on my hands, and what kind of goals I have coming up.

No ride is ever "average" to me, so I just checked my BikeJournal and calculated it. It came out to 40.03351955307. Yes, I have a lot of free time on my hands. Life is good.

Mine are generally average-length.

Anywhere from 15-30 during the week, longer rides on weekends.

My average ride is pathetically short in that I commute back and forth every day at 2.5 miles per trip. That means that each week I have 10 rides of 2.5 miles in length. I also mix in a couple of 35 to 40 mile rides and a typical Sunday morning ride in the 60 to 80 mile range.

Sometimes in the morning before classes/ clinical ill do 16 miles. And on the weekends ill do around 20. Working from 7am to 7pm 3-4 times a week doesnt leave much time to ride. And thats not counting classes!

Well....hard to say....but these are all rides I'd do during the week:

If I do my climbing repeat workout, that can range from 10-20 miles, depending on what I do....

My usual loop for a tempo/longer ride during the week is 35 miles

My recovery/easy ride loop is 16 miles

My climbing loop is 25 miles

My long climbing loop is 45 miles (need more daylight than is available now for that one, though)

So....I have options. Just depends what I'm doing and what I feel up to.

15 miles on a weekday in season, a few spin classes mixed in off season since my rides are in the morning before work and darkness is setting in. 30 to 80 miles on the weekend in one or two rides. A couple centuries coming up over the next 4 weeks.

No wife, no kids and no gf in the way, just dating. Life is pretty good, plenty of time for the road when I want

All of my rides are above average

Seriously: I try not to have "average" rides. Mix it up. Flats one day, climbs another day. Long ride one day, shorter another day. Hammer one day, take it easy the next. Though I generally do take the longer rides on the weekends just because of time limitations.

Edit: strict average = about 37 miles (all miles / # rides) but that's pretty useless for describing my routine.
