Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

restless leg syndrome

I have no idea how it started, but I've been dealing with it for about a year. I've noticed its gotten substantially more severe when I'm off my bike for a few days. I take walks and bounce my feet and end up just punching my legs sometimes until it stops.

Any connection for others between cycling and RLS or ideas for solutions?

I mean its mostly just really really really really f'in annoying. It's like an anxiety attack in my legs

RLS seems like one of those diseases "invented" by drug companies just to sell more product. Sure, people have always had restless legs, but is medication really necessary to lessen symptoms? If anything, RLS might make more fat Americans get out and exercise!

Try Vitamin E in liquid capsule form. On the rare occasion that I've experienced RLS Vitamin E has eliminated the problem within an hour or two.

Try a shot of Makers Mark bourbon, or a couple ounces of a good 15yo single malt Scotch on crushed ice.

Works for me every time.

I hope the ice you're using with that single-malt whisky is made from scottish water, otherwise you may as well be drinking a blend.

I find that after a long day on the bike I kick in my sleep alot that night. I am not sure if I am dreaming that I am still on the bike or why I am doing it. Really ticks off the wife.

My legs ache after about a half hour of sitting at work. So I get up and walk around. Since becoming very active I just can not stand to be still. Things feel better for me when moving or working out. Later.

sleep apnea can be a cause of this. Even if you're not overweight you can have OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) or CSA (central sleep apnea) OSA is caused by physiology and CSA is caused by the brain forgetting to make you breathe. RLS is often tied to either form of SA.

+1
i would see your family Dr. and let him know what is going on and then possibly go see a neurologist who is involved in studying sleep problems.

OP - how long ago did you start cycling? Have there been any major physiological changes to your legs (ie: gotten bigger/more muscular, lost fat, become more ripped?) If so, it's possible your muscles are simply constricting your blood vessels and your RLS (hahaha) is just your body's way of forcing blood circulation.

I think you need to stretch more. In the morning, before bed, and anytime your legs feel a little funny.

Also, skip the crazy medications and take an Advil or two. Ibuprofen is great for circulation.

I get this if I don't STRETCH regularly. I have a quick yoga routine that stretches the quads and hamstrings, and it has been a huge help. PLease try stretching before resorting to medication!

is this the same thing as constantly moving your legs when sitting down? I find that my legs are more adjutated when not riding especially when I'm used to the longer miles, my only remedy is to get out and ride

Try Bookers bourbon instead. You'll be as calm as a ten year old cat.

You can get an Rx for Requip from you doctor. I've prescribed it to patients who tell me that it works.

https://www.requip.com/

Supplements with Magnesium, Potassium and Calcium are also helpful. Do a google search.

The Restless Leg Syndrome Foundation has a forum, which would probably be an even better place to search than a cycling forum.
