Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Performance Ultra short...do they fit weird?

I got my Performance Ultra shorts today and man...do they fit weird at least on me. Really tight except for the leg openings where the grippy thingies are. They're so big there that they don't touch my legs at all. They're very long also...touching my knee area. This is my second attempt at getting a pair that fit and the other ones were the same. Also, the chamois seems quite thin when compared to my cheap Pearl Izumi Quest shorts.

Is it just me??? Seems like these aren't all that great when compared to my PIs which cost 1/2 as much.

Thanks

You are not the only one. I had the exact same issues. It is the only pair of shorts I have retired. POS

Thanks..I'm very disappointed with these. Guess I send them back and just head down to the LBS and get a pair of the Nike shorts they sell. It'll cost me more, but at least I'll know they fit when I leave.

I once had an issue with Nashbar brand shorts. I returned them because the leg grippers were waaay too loose, as if they were sized for trackies with humongous quads.

There is a huge difference in sizing between Performance Ultra shorts and Pearl Izumi.

Get stronger legs that fill out the grippers
They do fit weird. I use the bib version, they are pretty small - the medium is pretty tight on me at first, and usually a small in PI sizes. But for $50ish, they are killer bibs if they fit you right.

I have a pair. They fit OK. I bought them at the store so I could try them on before buying.

I have a couple of Performance and PI shorts and the Per. are indeed tighter than PIs, had to go to a small in PI so if you want a better fitting pair go with the Voler brand IMHO.

Ya, I guess I need to work on the quads so I can order freakishly proportioned shorts LOL

Just kidding...I tried to save a little $$ and just should have ponied up at the LBS. The shipping back and forth has eaten up some of the savings...ahh well..it's only money.

I love my Ultras. I bought a pair of those GORE bibs because they were on sale and thought I would love them because the material is so much better. Turns out the cut sucks compared to the Ultras. Lets my gut stick out and doesn't hug nearly as much as the Ultras.

I love my Ultras. Hopefully enough of you guys will convince everyone else not to buy them so I can get them on sale and stock up...

No matter how well defined your quads are, if the gripper is around your knee cap....
You figure out the rest

I believe there are a couple of previous threads on this topic. I was a bit surprised the first time I pulled them on -- quite tight -- but I do find them to be my favorite shorts by far. Soooo comfy, and they fit my soul-crushing thighs* quite well.

Ultra sizes tend to run smaller then other brands. I the the pad but not the fabric as much on these shorts. I really like the fabric on the Gore shorts and Nike, but not the pads as much. So, I am still looking for the perfect lycra. Later.

Does anybody have experience with Nike Bib Shorts or Knickers (padded)? What your opinion?

Same here. Guess it depends how massive your thighs are and how hung you are too.

I anticiapted fit issues based on my experience with other Performance shorts, so I bought a size larger than normal. Still too tight in the crotch area -- my boys are not happy in them.

I wrote a review of the shorts for the Performance web page and mentioned the sizing problem, but my comments have never appeared on thier web site. Seems they only post the positive comments...

The Performance Ultra bib is--for me--the perfect combination of fit and value. After the first couple of washes, they fit my legs/build absolutely perfectly. I feel absolutely pampered in them when I'm out suffering on the bike!!

If it makes any difference, I'm 6'0" 160lbs and wear the size M.

I too have noticed the odd fit...same as the others have said, tight in the crotch and upper thighs but loose down by the grippers. I have both the shorts and the bibs and I don't find that the bibs are as bad as the shorts...IMO the bibs fit fine...though again the gripper area is a little looser.

The kicker was that the previous generation of the Ultra was a GREAT fit and was my first pair of cyclign shorts. I got them in the fall of 2004 on closeout and loved them so in the spring I ordered 2 more pairs assuming they only improved the design...not that they totally changed the cut of the material. I was dissapointed when I received them and tried them on....I only wear them on the trainer now...but I also only wear bibs when I ride outdoors.

I had a pair of 2005 Ultra bibs shorts and the fit was ok the inseam seemed really short but my biggest problem was they did not hold up very well the eischler fabric began fraying and the chamois felt like sandpaper and this was only after 5 months wearing them once a week. Performance was really good about taking them back and refunding my bucks. I replaced them with a pair of santini bibs. Performance cust. service is top notch. I just won't buy their house brand clothing again.
