Lactic Acid Slowdown

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lactic Acid Slowdown

I'm riding over 100 miles/week and getting stronger. Unfortunately, it seems to take longer and longer for my legs to warm up and the lactic acid to start flowing to where I can really get the most out of my leg muscles and not strain my joints. I'm talking 10-15 miles with hills and multiple heart zones!

Any suggestions for getting the lead out quicker?

I've noticed that it can take me 20-30 minutes to get into a zone where I can just cruise.

Try pushing yourself earlier in the ride to get to that point quicker. Maybe someone will have a better solution for both of us.

It takes a bit for my legs to get into a groove as well.
Some of the evenings after work when I join a group they're chomping at the bit to blast off because most of them have already put 25 or more miles under their belts.

I'm all tight and cold feeling and the only warm up I get is getting out of downtown traffic - then - BAM!

I too take about 30 minutes to get warmed up to where I feel like I can push without blowing up. Starting off fast early doesn't help me, if anything it seems to extend the time with which I feel like I can push. I've just accepted the fact that I take about 30 minutes to warm up no matter what I do.

I scrimped on warm-up a couple of months ago because I wanted to get down to my LBS to watch the final TDF time trial. I went out on my standard 20 mile, pretty hilly route and pushed hard from the beginning. Three-fourths of the way through I started cramping in both my calves and had to soft pedal the rest of the way home. Listen to your body...it knows better than you. Takes me about 30 minutes before I can really bear down with it hurting.

Its best to warn up properly, be patient. The more fitness I gain the more warm-up it takes, but usually between 20 to 30 minutes. Try stretching a bit before ya ride too, that seems to help.

Time to warm up will increase with muscle mass. This has nothing to do with lactic acid however, it's just a matter of blood vessels opening up and flow starting, as well as local temperature increasing for optimal metabolic enzyme activity.
This is why pros ride a trainer before a time trial. It just takes time, but take the time, because if you push too soon, tendonitis could result.
