transporting a carbon framed bike

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

transporting a carbon framed bike

What is the cheapest, and still safe, way of air-freighting a carbon framed bike?

Really though....................in a cardboard transporter that you can get from most shippers for bike frames and make sure you wrap the head tube; BB area and contact points with a bubble wrap and place chocks in the box to keep the bike frame from moving.

Best way................take it to your LBS and have them box it!

OK...I have a hard shipping case, and I am half owner of a Scicon padded case that I went in on with a friend (haven't seen it yet in person).

Not sure which is safer for shipping.

My concern about the hard case is compression on the rear triangle, which I noticed was a minor issue whenever I have used it with my steel frame.

My concern about the scicon is obviously how protective is the padding if airline monkeys start tossing it around or throwing other stuff on top of it...

Anyone have direct experience with the scicon soft case...? My friend has used it but he is a cycling novice and doesn't own a road bike.

trico's come with screws/nuts to put into the fork and rear dropouts, to specifically avoid this. otherwise you can put an old hub on the rear tri. that's what i did with my padded bike bag.

in case you don't know - make sure to always remove the RD when you pack up the bike.

So why does almost every bike made come to the shop with the rd installed?

how should i know?

i'm not talking about bikes in cardboard boxes, i'm talking about a bike in a trico case, or a padded bag.

if you want to break or bend your RD hanger, don't let me stop you. i guess i should know better, i've only been flying with bikes for 15 years.

Everyone's always telling me that CF is stronger than steel. Just put it in a @*%&$-ing box. Geeze. You could probably use it for landing gear and not hurt it.
