Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What to wear when it gets chilly?

Sounds silly.. but the other night I put on my bib-shorts... short sleeve red jersey.. and a loose wind breaker and went for a ride. It was warm enough for the shorts.. but too cold for just the short sleeve jersey. The wind breaker was obvisouly too loose and flapping in the wind (annoying). I noticed some riders had tight long sleeve shirts under their jerseys. Would something like an under armour tight long sleeve jersey work? I notice that too much sweat and a chill in the air makes for a bad ride. What do you all wear?

Secondly.... It will be getting even a bit colder soon. I guess I will need some bib tights... what do you wear top to bottom when it gets colder?

Thanks!

Arm warmers are great for when it gets a little chilly.

Below 40F = knickers, legwarmers & a wool sweater. This works for me down to the low 20F temps. The colder it is, the heavier the knit sweater.

I live in Silicon Valley and take primarily mid day rides. The most I'll put on are leg and arm warmers and some light running gloves underneath my riding gloves.

For fall....cool temps but not cold....lets say 50-65

Top:
Short-sleeved base layer next to your skin.

Arm warmers.

Jersey over the warmers and base layer.

Bottom:
Leg warmers.
Shorts/Bibs over the warmers.

If it's below 60 the rule I follow is one that a pro rider once told me....cover your knees if it is below 60.
Use knicker bibs (3/4 length) in the fall. In winter they have full-length bibs too.

For the colder late fall rides:

Layering top and bottom is key.

Here's the full-metal Hipcycler Clothing Recommendation:

--Long sleeved base layer
--Long sleeved jersey
--Winter riding jacket on top of it all

--Leg warmers
--Bibs
--Winter riding pant on top of it all

--Full-fingered gloves
--Booties over the shoes
--Balaclava over the head

Oh, and for the fall I would recommend a nice riding vest. I like to throw that on over the top to break the wind a little better....but lets be honest....I love the look of my cool vest too.

I think we really need a sticky for this, as winter apparel threads are popping up practically daily.

Try the winter riding forum, there's some good info there.

I like to wear those really tight long sleeve shirts under a not so lose sweatshirt. The long sleeve shirts I am referring to are like spandex and they keep you really warm. As far as the legs, I never ride with anything but shorts, snow or no snow. Can't stand to have anything on other than shorts when riding. Also, wear gloves. I like to feel my hands!!!

Leg warmers, long sleeve jersey and Helly Hanson base layer. Long fingered mtb gloves and a folded bandanna/headband to keep ears warm (get earaches in cold winds). Also have neoprene booties to cover shoes. And my rain coat. I live in Ontario and it can get real bloody cold. A rode ride in Jan can occur in temps of -5'C.

Low to mid 60s I use knee warmers, a wind vest and thin long fingered gloves.

Mid 50s to upper 50s: I'll add arm warmers or a long sleeve shirt and regular mtb gloves. If it's a cloudy, foggy morning I'm more inclined to a long sleeve shirt. On clear mornings arm warmers are better as it will warm up pretty quick.

Low 50s to high 40s: Same as above.

Mid 30s (that's as cold as it gets here) to mid 40s: I might add a mid cap to keep my ears warm and thin sock liners to help keep my feet dry and warm. Though if it gets that cold here, it's clear as a bell so once the sun comes up it warms up pretty quick. I usually end up taking the mid-cap and sock liners off mid way into the ride.

OK.. what are leg warmers and arm warmers? Do they only go part way up the limb? Never heard of these. I guess a Under Armour type long sleeve shirt under the jersey is not the way to go? I will search for fall weather.. I didn't think of that combo

base layer is a must, otherwise, you will capture moisture and freeze. You want to break the wind in front, respire out the back (opposite of what you do after a chili dinner at home).

Along with my regular shorts and jersey, leg warmers and a thin capilene undershirt for 55-65, a goretex wind-stopper jacket (not cycling specific) and long fingered gloves when it gets colder, and another top layer when it gets below 40. I don't usually use a hat but sometimes ear warmers of some type. If it gets much below 35 I stay home (go ahead, call me a wimp.)

This morning it was 57F when I left the house. I wore bibs, knee warmers, a s/s jersey and armwarmers. It was perfect.

Another nice thing for cool weather riding is thin poly gloves. If you can't find them at the LBS, go to the local ski shop and ask for "glove liners". They fit under cycling gloves to give your finger tips a little protection but they can be slippery on the brake lever. A great cheap alternative to that is ragwool gloves with rubber dots. I've seen these at the LBS under the Cannondale brand for $12 or nonbranded at supermarket for $3.

when it's just a little cold, I wear Under Armour Heat Gear short sleeve T-shirt

under armour heat gear short sleeve

if it's colder, I'll add the Pearl Izumi Arm warmers (warmers are nice because if it gets hotter during the ride you can always take them off)

arm warmers

what arm warmers look like after you put them on

if it's even colder, I'll additionally put on my Pearl Izumi AmFIB Booties, yea they're expensive but worth it, you don't want your feet or toes gettin frozen, it just makes your ride quite uncomfortable since it's the connection between you and the bike

booties

if it's freezing I'll add on the Pearl Izumi Leg warmers

leg warmers

I've heard a lot of praise for knee warmers, I should invest in a pair for when leg warmers are just too much

I did a 50 mile ride last Sunday in 65 degree weather (with a lot of wind) in my cycling shorts/short sleeve jersey, with a poly t-shirt underneath my cycling jersey. Froze my ass off on that ride.....particularly in the shade.

Where the hell did summer go? I hate wearing layers while riding.

that sounds like a typical warm summer day in NW Europe.

the pic in my previous post was from the last weekend in May!

In cool temps, I have a nice set of Performance tights. Very lightweight with a brushed lining. Super comfy. I wear them over my shorts.

I also wear a regualr jersey with a nice breathable cycling jacket over it. I can wear that jacket from 65F-45F.

Below 45F I add a thin nylon shell over all that to lock in the heat and keep out the wind.
And, below 45F I switch to my Performance Triflex thights, and neoprene booties. They are good down below freezing.

Of course, this could also be why I'm looking to move to Arizona in the next 5 years.....

I like anything above 80 degrees for the most part. Oh, and I was wearing 3 layers (wicking layer, poly/neoprene long sleeve jersey, and cycling jersey) back in May here, also. It didn't really start getting warm here until mid May. Summer weather was relatively short-lived this year....just over 3 1/2 months.

The only time I like cold weather is for mountaineering purposes. I love blizzards. Other than that....I hate snow/cold weather.

+1 Started my ride on Monday with SS Jersey & bib shorts, which was OK, but once the sun started setting, holy cr*p! I'm going to have to invest in some leg and arm warmers now that I've move north. That being said, as nice as it is to ride when it's warm, nothing beats riding through all of the fall foliage.

Has anyone tried Calientoes or other similiar half shoe covers? My feet were freezing, and those seem small enough to just store in a jersey pocket.

Yup. They're surprisingly warm. The only problem is that they edges tend to get shredded if you do too much walking around in your bike shoes. But they're not terribly expensive so I'll probably just buy a fresh set for the season.

I have been wearing an RBK wet gear baselayer, a jersey, bibs with leg warmers. When it is just slightly colder I have been wearing my Asso Intermediate Long sleeve jersey, it has wind bloc in strategic areas. All of that stuff allows me to adapt for if it warms up later in the ride, which it has.

For Jacket type weather where It's going to be cool for the entire ride, I have been wearing my Sugoi cycling jacket. It's a nice snug fit that does not flap in the wind, is wind shedding in the front and arms, while totally beathable in the back and back of the arms.

It's like a thicker warmer jersey, I love this thing, its a small concession, cold weather... ugh,.... I get to wear it Yay!!
