Commuting on Kysrium wheels?
I just found a great deal on a road bike, got a 2001 Jamis Eclipse for not much $. Really happy with it. However, it is (against strong reccomendation) my A string bike and my daily rider. I commute, ride around town, and ride on weekends with it. The stock wheels are Mavic Kyrsium SSC's (not the SL's). I have read that it is a relatively bomb-proof wheelset, but so far I have knocked them through about 4 potholes, and I am a 200lb rider with a 20lb messenger bag on my back...
I think I know the answer to this question, but am I going to completely destroy this wheelset riding it to work? Will I be okay if I keep it out of the potholes? I already have a slight knocking feeling coming from the rear wheel, only when braking, and I don't see a dent in the rim and it's not out of true... bent the axle a bit maybe? I think it was doing that when I bought it actually, it's not really bad but noticeable. I'm going to keep track of it to see if it gets any worse. I hate feeling like I'm riding on eggshells though...
I think I need to get a set of commuting wheels so I don't trash my nice wheelset, if I haven't already, but I'm trying not to spend a bunch more money as I just bought the bike! Hopefully I can keep these wheels in good shape for a month or so and then I can spring for a second wheelset. I'm just more concerned with not getting hit by a truck than avoiding cracks in the SF asphalt!
Any ideas? If I need a new wheelset, can someone suggest a commuter set I might be able to get on ebay?

Probably an Open Pro Rim with at least 32 spokes and 105 hubs will work. You should be able to pick a set of these up pretty reasonable. BTW, I use this very setup for my commuter with no troubles. I'm assuming you run Shimano.

I thought you were looking for a backup set of wheels to save your ksyriums. I have the Open Pro's on my commuter and they are great all around wheels. Ksyriums are fantastic wheels and if you are worried about banging them up, buy another set of wheels.

Well, I am sort of so thank you for that... but I'm also asking if I'm right that I'm going to destroy them riding them the way I am? Are they as resilient as everyone says they are and I might get away with commuting on them?
And honestly, I've never owned a high-end road bike before... is hitting a pothole going to wreck my rims? I feel like I should be riding on eggshells around the city, and I'd rather pay attention to traffic than try to save my wheels from every crack in the road. How strong are they?

my nice bike is at home
I find the SL's to be very strong, I you live where there are no potholes I would just ride the ssc's, but maybe not if you lock the bike on the street or stop at a bar on the way home.
So far I find the sl's durable...

Ok, I understand your concerns now. Actually, ksyriums are darn near bulletproof. As long as your tires are pumped up you shouldn't have anything to worry about with your wheels.

I have two sets of Kysriums I ride everyday. Like others have said, they are bulletproof. The key is keeping the tires inflated.

Uhhh..... bombing through potholes with a 220lb load is eventually goin to f**k up any rim, break spokes, damage bearings, not to mention your a**. Road bikes are tough but most of us like to think we can ride with a little finesse.

I picked up a set of used Ksyrium SLs on ebay last January for $375. I have them on my LOOK which I've been riding to work on. No problems with them yet. I've probably only put about 500-600 miles on them so far though (I was riding my LeMond quite a bit after building it up in March-I have Open Pro/Record on that bike...also bombproof).
A guy I work with rides his race bike to work 2-3 days a week or more with a Rolf Vigor wheelset. He probably weighs about 150lbs though.

In terms of maintenance, the Ksyriums will probably be better for commuting than the Open Pros.
My last bike had an open pro in the rear, and it would go out of true every couple thousand miles. Not often, but enough to get slightly annoying. The Ksyriums should stay true until they break. Of course they will eventually wear out, but that should be a while off.
