Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What annoys me

I've been biking for about a year now and I have one thing that just annoys the crap out of me. It's people who aren't racing that spend so much money on their bike thinking it'll make them better. Also people who aren't anything amazingly good at racing. Buying some $1000, $2000, $4000, or $6000 bike isn't going to make you any faster (well maybe a little). I mean you aren't in the Tour de France where every second counts. They buy really expensive bikes to go bike at most 20 or 30 miles at slow speeds. Also most of these people started biking to get in shape. You don't need an expensive bike to get in shape. You don't need a Lance Armstrong bike to get fast. As long as you have a bike that works and rolls freely you can beat anybody if you train yourself. Many people blame why they are so tired at the end of the ride on their bike and how the pedals wern't light enough. Come on, it's in yourself and not so much in the bike. Remember its about 95% in the person and 5% in the bike. I would much rather rely on the 95% in the person than the 5% in the bike. If you took the time that it takes you to earn the money to buy whatever for your bike and put that time into training you'll be so much faster. Also you'll weight less and be sexier all at the same time. It pays off. You also won't have cramps and the feeling of your heart poping out during a race or long ride.

Jealous Seth? Why else would it bother you enough to write a post concerning yourself with what others do with there hard earned money. Also, you have no clue how long it takes for someone else to earn enough to buy something. It may take a minimum wage employee a full year while it may take a Profesional an hour or two to earn enough.

I don't need a Porsche to drive to the office, but I enjoy it. I don't need a Merlin to go for a bike ride, but I enjoy that too. And if the equipment doesn't matter, then no ones getting an advantage on you, and there's no rational reason it should annoy you.

I get annoyed by guys who care how others spend their money.

Do I find it funny that my +260lb. buddy spent $5,000 on a bike he rides 500+ miles a year. Yes.

Do I love the look on his face as he tries to keep up with me while I'm on a mountain bike, absolutely.

Here's a little life lesson for you.

Let's say you make $45,000 a year and you bought your bike for $800. That's 1.7% of your gross salary.

Let's say my buddy spent $5,000 on his bike. But my buddy make $300,000 dollars a year which means he spent 1.6% of his yearly salary on his bike, proportionally less than you did. Not to mention the fact that you've got $44,200 left to live on while he still has $295,000.

Bottom line, stick your nose back where it belongs, in your business.

Hey, if someone spends $6,000 on a bike and can only muster 12 MPH, that's their business, it was their money. So long as they don't cap a "better than thou" or "you're not as dedicated" attitude, then let them have their thing. It's no skin off your nose how much they spend, so long as they are and remain fairly polite.

My most recent bike purchase cost me about fifteen hours worth of wages. How much faster would fifteen hours of riding make me? Not much. Also, some working folks are required to work a certain amount, either by schedule or deadlines, so I can't just skip out early and go riding.

In my case, though, the new bike is actually slower than the old one...

I weight a lot less. And look a lot sexier too.
And the reason my heart is poping out during a long ride or race is cause I'm trying to stay away from you and your bad typying skilz. Lest it rubses off oN me.

Wendy's has $.99 Angus burgers?

I'm a fan of the Carl's Jr. Six Dollar Burgers (w/ Angus). Not actually six dollars.

Well the Wendys is not Angus. But using the OP's reasoning, what's the differance? A burger is a burger

i hear that. and, what's with people using fancy stainless steel forks and knives? you can get plastic ones at wallgreens for, like, much less money.

Well, if a person who rides 500miles per year buys a 5k bike, they are paying for the happiness extracted from the purchase. If that makes them happy, then it is worth it. Does not matter how you treat it.
