Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

designing custom jersies

I have been put in charge of designing a jersey for my college team. I want to make a couple different jersies that the team can choose from. I think we are ordering from customsublimation.com as we have heard nothing but good about them. They have adobe templates to work with on the site. Since I am not the most computer-saavy person, can someone give me some good programs to use to design a jersey? I need something I can get for free and is not too hard to use. Anybody have any ideas? There is a chance I can get access to some programs through the graphic design department at school.

Why don't you sketch the design by hand and take that to the graphic design department. Maybe a student would be happy to put it to computer using Adobe Illustrator.

Definitely get some competent help if your design is going to have pictures or colors instead of just (boring boring boring) text on a solid background. I'm sure you hire some starving art student to help you for not much money. You're going to be wearing this thing all year, so you may as well get something nice.

That's a good idea. Plus, the student would have an extra piece for their portfolio.

if you don't have many computer skills, how did you become the one who has the design responsibilities? draw the short straw?

don't worry, you wouldn't be the first one to design team kit who has no artistic/design skills. just take a look at the US national team kit from this years world championships

If you have budget limits, just remember that they will charge by the color. The design can be just as elaborate as you desire, but there will be a seperate screen for each color.

From someone who has at least a little bit of experience designing things on computer, you should use a vector-based drawing software if you're putting logos or text on the jersey- I'd suggest Adobe Illustrator, as said above, and double check with custom sublimation to see what file format they want it in- most likely they'll be able to take the default Illustrator file type (extension .ai), but they may want it in a .eps file, which is something you can export from Illustrator. If you've never used Illustrator, you might find it difficult- so I'd find someone who is familiar with it (Photoshop is much more intuitive, IMO).

Also, they'll likely want any text that you send them in Illustrator converted to paths- this is a simple command in Illustrator, and someone who's exported from it before should know how to do it (if not you can find it in a help menu).

Good luck, and post a jpeg when you're done!

Appreciate all of the help guys! I am in charge of it as the club is small, I am the president, and I want to make sure it gets done promptly so we have everything before winter break. I am going to try and sketch everything by hand and then talk to someone about getting it on adobe illustrator.

Buy one of the design kids some beers and do it over dinner and beers at the pub, you'l find it much easier than trying to explain your sketches to a designer and more than likely save you some time as well. A good designer will be able to give you a good idea over your initial meeting.
Adobe Illustrator and/or Photoshop are totally the way to go.

appreciate the advice...while we are handing it out you may take note of your own spelling before advising others...

On a seperate note, I was able to arrange a meeting with two guys in the graphic design dept. and they are going to help me make 3-4 different jerseys this saturday. I will make sure to post pics and start a poll up.

Toyota-United used Cervelo P3C's this season as their TT bikes. United Bicycles doesn't make TT bikes.

May I make a suggestion? Do not start a poll! Too many cooks. Don't be influenced by anyone outside your club. Keep the design selection in house. Post the final selection if you like.
