2006 vs 2007 Campy?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2006 vs 2007 Campy?

I know this has already been discussed in great length but can't find the old thread that had the answers I was looking for. What exactly is the difference between the 2006 and 2007 campy shifters? Is it just the QS? What exactly does the QS does differently? I know there isn't as many trims on the front, but that's all I know.

THere are still the same number of trims on the front (at least with Record and Chorus. QS just decreases the amount of travel needed to cause a "click." Below Chorus the right shifters use the Escape mechanism... which totally blows. It limits the ability to dump as many gears as desired. I believe it drops two gears max.

What level?

Changes for 2007
Record/Chorus: QS on the left lever, nothing on the right
Centaur/Veloce: QS on the left lever, loss of the ability to drop multiple cogs on the back with the thumb shifter on the right
Mirage/Xenon:now 10 speed.

Ok, I'm going to bump this thread instead of creating a new one...

Let's hear from the OWNERS of 2007 Campagnolo Veloce or Centaur:

How many gears is it at a time with the Escape Mech in each direction? I've heard it both ways on downshifts, from multiple sources, and can't seem to get a straight answer anywhere. And I even think people are starting to mix up terminology of upshift/downshift/etc. So those who have used the stuff, spell it out for us all who are considering going with 2007 Campy Veloce or Centaur groupsets.

Not an owner but everything I have heard says the thumb shifter (I woul dcall this going down the cassette) can do 1 gear at a time and the paddle will do up to 3 gears at a time.

Don't go by what Competitive Cyclist says on their site because they say it will work with Ergobrain and it wont.

Chopper - velonews says 1 downshift, a couple of the shops say 1 downshift. Cyclingnews (from mid-July) says 2 downshifts. It certainly could be that early rumors got rolling when the 'escape' news hit were wrong, or people misunderstood before printing the articles.

I have 2007 Veloce shifters. Definitely 1 downshift (thumb).... doesn't bother me since I'm used to Shimano. +1 on the QS feature since I used to ride Veloce 9's and the long throw sucked bigtime.

Suppose that settles it. Guess the 2 gear downshift was early rumors. I've already got Campy wheels on the way, its no worse than Shimano's best offering, and I like the feel of the Campy hoods far and above Shimano. So Veloce or Centaur it is still for the Flyte.

07 Record is really nice. The QS left shifter still has all the trims that the 06 and older have. If I were to build up another bike (which i might in the near future) I would get Centaur or Veloce and use Chorus Shifters.

I'm going to have one bike with Chorus shifters, the Veloce or Centaur on the Flyte has a fairly strict budget. I got the frame/handlebar/stem/seatpost for $150 from $470+, fork for $135 from $300+, Wheels for $255 from $370+.

How about this question - any difference in the chain rings between Centaur and Veloce?

Well, they are certainly different by the pictures. The website says Ultra Drive Rings on the Centaur, and Exa Drive on the Veloce. Don't really know the difference.

one of the main reasons I switched to Campy was the fact that I could go down an entire cassette with one shift, I'll stick with 2006 for now.

Wish PBK would get their full line of Campy in stock so I could see approx what a full veloce group with the centaur crank would be. Suppose they've got enough on the website for me to add it up myself. But I'm a bit lazy.

FWIW, www.totalcycling.com seems to have a pretty complete stock and fairly similar prices to PBK...

I've also been reading some past threads about people getting OEM take-offs and used-looking stuff from 11speed. Has anyone dealt with them?

I don't think that the new 07 escape mechanism is as bad as people say. Yes 1 or 2 shifts at a time but, every other group does that. ALso, I think I remember reading how the shifting has actually gotten easier, it already was pretty easy. I suspect shifting takes very little time, and it would be nice if it was easier to shift for the FD anyways.
My 06 veloce is fantastic. I can downshift the entire spectrum of 10 gears in at once if I really push the lever down to the max. I can upshift 5 at a time if I push it to the max. It is not comfortable to do that though, so I only shift 2 gears at once anyways.
If I saw some brand new 07 veloce shifters sitting at my doorstep, a gift from god, I would install them over the 06.

Good price Pete. I'm eyeing a Veloce FD for my mixed group build, but picking up a Chorus for that price you can't go wrong. Look forward to seeing it and the rest of the group on the new ride.

Yeah, I've kinda decided to buy individual components and save the cranks for last, because my cranks are still working OK... I guess I get to be the guinea pig to try a QS front derailleur with STI brifters...

(edit) good night for derailleurs on ebay... just found an 07 chorus rear derailleur for cheap too!
