Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

More interesting top speed post...

Instead of posting your top speed in a descent (boring), how about your top speeds on the flats, with, of course, any/all qualifying remarks about the conditions/situation.

33 MPH, flat out, breathing so I hard I thought I'd pass out. Oh, and it was sunny, if that matters. But I didn't puke. That's the best I can do. I will almost guarantee I will be the slowest speed to post in this thread.

edit: My "fast" bike weighs 25 lbs. Plus, I had just put on a Brooks B5N, so it was more like 27lbs

I held 26mph for about a mile or so into a pretty good headwind...I was drafting another rider though.

82 mph, level terrain.

I really recommend the Yak rack and a fast car if you want to replicate this.

I've done 35 with a tailwind. I'm not much of a sprinter, so my speed is in the flats, descents and ascents.

I hit 27 mph for about 6 seconds today on my mountain bike on a flat road. Im definitely the slowest here. I do have slicks on my mtb. Though, I can't be sure about how well calibrated my computer is.

With some sprint specific training, that will be attainable. Hard group rides, 2x20mins and 10x1min on/offs are the only thing I've done. Next year will be much more balanced and focused.

wtf everbody is slow. I've gone 26 leading a group by accident. I don't have a speedometer, though. That was just someone else's reading. Yes, I'm not good at being in front. I'm sure I go over 30 quite often though. Sometimes I feel like keeping up with cars is all.

*Not claiming to be fast. Just faster than those with top speeds in the 20s.

50 mph for about 5 km , but I cheated as I was drafting behind a road train. The best I've got is 42 mph on the final sprint of my last group ride......and I only got 2nd .

Regards Dave

I've gotten up to 42mph a few times on my road bike (flat/calm) on a fresh pair of legs. The max I can usually go in in the high 30's mph after say a solo century. Of course, there's never a prize incentive for me to try to go faster despite the tired legs? Max I've gone while seated under similar conditions is 37mph. Max on MTB is 34mph (non-suspension).

hmm i hit 37.4 on my fixed gear road bike yesterday. i run a 42x15 ratio, so i was spinning around 155 rpm... which was too much for me to sustain for more than a few seconds. downhill of course.

Just a tick over 35 mph trying to catch onto the draft of a tractor trailer.....I could've gone slightly (not much) faster, but I still had 10 miles left in my ride and didn't want to blow myself up completely. As it was, it took a few minutes to recover from that effort.....mainly since I was going around 23-25 mph behind him (we were all stopped for an accident, and I was behind the truck when we started going again), and then he started accelerating hard when he probably figured out what I was trying to do. It was a truck hauling cars, so he could see me pretty clearly. I started closing in at around 30 mph, then he shifted to another gear and accelerated more, and once I got up to around 35 mph, I threw in the towel and he kept going. I was a good 15 or so feet out of the draft, and I figured I wasn't going to catch it. Would've been fun to do so, though, and would've been cruising along at 40+ mph fairly comfortably if i was able to get in. Ah well.
