To shred, or not to shred...ahhh, that's the question!

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

To shred, or not to shred...ahhh, that's the question!

Trainer Tires vs. Training tires

Riding weather has now arrived! (It's fall in the Carolinas ) However, it will eventually come to an end, and I'm trying to work out the training schedule for when official hibernation time begins. The time is near for the trainer to make its yearly appearance.

I see Continental has a tire made especially for trainers - it's called the hometrainer. This is a bright yellow thing that is supposed to be made of a compound that will resist a lot of trainer wear. Strictly for indoor use.

Nashbar has lot's of low cost tires that I might not be willing to trust on the road, but wouldn't hesitate to shred on a trainer.

Here's the quandry: Should I buy one of the "trainer" tires for around $35, or several cheaper road tires for $8 - $9 each? These will be going on a second bike, so swapping out tires in order to ride on those "warm" winter days will not be a factor. Opinions?

How many tires do you expect to wear out?

The only tires I've ever destroyed on a trainer were old sewups.

I wouldn't put new tires on the trainer, only on the road.

I use Conti 1000s on my trainer which I get for about $15 from MEC. I also use Conti 1000s on my outdoor road bicycles!!

I've worn out too many Conti 1000s to count on the road outside from the quantity of riding I do.

I've also done quite a bit of trainer riding over the years, but I've yet to wear out even one of my Conti 1000s there. I'm still using the original tire I put on my trainer bicycle back about 3 years ago.

Thanks, sounds like a basic tire may be the way to go!
