Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Today's Ride (10.22.06, 48ºF)

Went out for a 40 mile-r today, but ended up turning at the 30 miles mark. Anyways I got a few pictures, but I missed the biggest hills. It was 48ºF out, I wore two under armor shirts, short sleeved jersey, shorts with no leg warmers and no booties. I taped the vents on my shoe soles though.

As I start out on Lake Road, apparently the coldest road today. I wonder why?

About five miles down the road, this is a short bridge, but you’d never know it. The beach is to my left.

About 11 or 12 miles into the ride. I don’t know why, but I like this curve. This is about a mile into the Rocky River Valley, a 30mph turn .75 miles after a downhill. It’s really easy to keep yourself at a high speed even a miles after the hill.

Just after that last curve, I slow down to 25mph or so, still maintaining a lot of momentum. A long hill is coming up on my right.

Here I am nearing the hill, I’m going to pass on climbing it right now because I hate riding hills with one hand.

The base of the hill.

Just some scenery crossing a short bridge. This is the reason why it’s called the Rocky River Valley.

This is another HUGE hill a miles after that last one. It’s steep and goes on forever. I climbed it once and that was enough, since it’s so cracked and full of potholes and gravel, I’ll never go up or down again. Going up in a car scares you enough.

Just taking in more fall scenery I guess. There is a river that runs to my right.

Looking down that first hill after climbing it. BTW: I didn’t climb in the bike lane, that’s just where I’m taking the picture.

My steed. The red and silver Fizik is on because it matches my new bike, but my new bike isn’t here yet so I’m just testing it out.

Looking to another part of the Metroparks, there is another big hill down there by the grey house. Overall, the Metroparks has about 12 good hills.

Did you ever tackle that hill on Aerospace Pkwy? I'll try and get a picture of that to scare some of these OCP's.

Great picutures, looks like you had a great ride on very nice day. I like looking at fall from a distance, it was 80° here today.

Spafford Dr. hill going up to the airport? that aint nothing.
Lewis drive coming out of cedar point dr. is good too.

the steepest hills around here are in hinckley though.

Try the 17% grade on 303.

everything else is either in the valley or east-side

Today's Ride

Today's ride here in Florida was in 89 degree heat. I understand the folks up north have to give up the bikes for the snow etc. but as a reward, you get to see some stunning stuff. All we get here is the same thing day after day. Weekend rides will get really good in December and January though, with highs in the 60s or low 70s. Makes for great mid-day rides.

Hey have you any of you Buckeyes ever been down in the Mansfield area to do any biking? Mohican state park area? Lots of rolling hills in that area to ride and some great scenery. I grew up in that area and the fall weather was usually the most pleasant

nice pics, and saddle, but where's your saddle bag? you should consider yourself lucky, that you didn't get a flat, unless of course you had extra wheels and tires in the team car... j/k

really nice pics though...

Thanks for the ride pics and the opportunity to live vicariously. I haven't been out riding for 2 weeks. However, I really don't mind, we had a baby on Tuesday.

As long as your feet are warm, who needs healthy Knees?

Its part of the emerald necklace; the unofficial name for cleveland metroparks that circles the metropolitan area. Rocky River Reservation is just a few miles of this necklace, located just west of cleveland.

I keep a tube and a lever in my jersey pocket, a camera in the other, and a cell phone in my shorts pocket. I'm set. I've also got that frame pump to inflate my tyres.
