Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Absolutely. In fact, 105 cassettes are a pretty good deal. They're all the same in terms of the tooth profile, etc., but the Ultegra and DA cassettes are lighter and more expensive. So if you don't mind the extra weight, you can save a lot of money by getting the 105.

The only major difference is that the 105 will last longer....

If you do buy a 10 spd Ultegra cassette just rememebr that the "10S" on the spacers doesn't mean "105"....

So the Ultegra is 15 grams lighter and $7 cheaper... No difference in shift performance? Extra engineering on the teeth?

Even cheaper on eBay. I've picked up several 105 cassettes for 1/2 the price of Ultegra (Buy It Now prices). As far as performance, without looking closely at the lock ring, I can't tell which cassette is on my wheel (I have 2 105s and 3 Ultegras) and the weight is minimal. The 105 may not be available in all the different sizes that the Ultegras have. But they do come in the popular 12-23/25/27 sizes.

How often do you shift out cassettes? Or are all these on different bikes?

All different bikes but I just replaced one Ultegra cassette after 3k miles (along with a new chain). The cassette got moved over to my "trainer" wheelset. But if I'm going to do some hills, I'll put on a 27 on my AC350 rather the 12-23 that it has now. Simple 5 minute swap.

have you weighed them yourself. I weighed 10 spd stuff yesterday. Both in box with (same for each) they weighed exactly the same. ultegra and 105. Granted I should of taken them out of the box but it was not my stock and I was happy that the shop let me use the scale to weigh them.12-27 is what I weighed. if there truly is a difference other than finish I cant imagine it is much.

How can you tell the difference? Does it say "105" or "Ultegra" somewhere on it?

True dat.

I should point out that I have one bike with RSX, 105, Ultegra, and Dura Ace. It all works just fine. And then I have another bike with Centaur, Chorus, and Record. And that works just fine too.

You want to start a good thread, ask if you can put a Record part on an otherwise all-Ultegra bike.

I think it has 6600 and 5600 on the lock rings.

it does have cs-5600 on the lockring next to hyperglide HG but I'd doubt you see it when on the bike. the major difference is that the Ultegra is nickle plated and the 105 is chrome plated besides that they look the same. the weight difference is only 18 grams at least that is for the two that I have. I recently got a CS- 5600 off Ebay for $32. there are a lot of shimano 10 spd cassettes listed on Ebay

Yes and see the recent post about how well Campy & Shimano work well together.

Well...I've f'd this one up before...I was thinking about the difference between a Ti cassette and a steel cassette (such as Dura-Ace vs Ultegra/105). In that instance the steel cogs will last longer. As for "how much" it would depend on usage and care, and chain maintenance, etc... (I'm not biting on that one )

But I believe Ultegra and 105 are basically the same steel cogs. Someone mentioned that the 105 are chrome plated vs the nickel on the Ultegra. I can not make an educated statement regarding the wear life between the two coatings.

The ultegra and 105 are exactly the same except the finish on the cogs. They both use steel cogs. Shimano's website claims both use a Nickle plating but dont know how they really differ.

The 105 does come in the handy 11-25 cluster for you compact fellows.

Oooh. 11-25 is good for us non-compact fellows as well.
