When you find a bike shop, find out what high end framesets go for, to see if the prices charged in the Far East are less than what we pay everywhere else.

There was two across the street from each other in the middle of the Kowloon goldfish market. Seriously.
Good prices on asian-made parts, as expected, north american and european parts are generally more expensive.

I think what comes into play is that while there are many bike shops in Taiwan, but few mid to high end shops. Right now I am in a city of over a million people and there are 3 shops that I have found that deal in mid to high end road bikes. I would think the market for mid to high end bikes at a given shop is much stronger in the US than Taiwan, in spite of the fact that Giant is the largest in the world. There is not much recreational riding here as we think of it and folks don't value mid to high end bikes. As I was told once by a Taiwanese woman after she inspected my bike: "You could have had scooter for that!". True, but that wasn't the point...

i'm a local guy in Hong Kong. There are some good bike shops here. What you choose is total depended
on what brand you want to buy. If you want to buy trek or giant, i suggest you go to the 'friendly'
bike shop in Mui Wo. Although it's a bit far from town, the shop ower is very nice, provides useful
suggestions. The listed price may be a bit higher, but you can have a great deal on a reduced price. great customer services, it's very important.
If you want to buy some european stuff, you can go to 'Wings' in Monk Kok. It's the only shop in Hong Kong sells colnago, look......but it provide no customer services after you pay. So, i bought my trek and giant from 'friendly'
