Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It's official; I'm a wuss now

For cryin' out loud....
I'm scanning BF in the home office at a time when I am usually riding.

But I looked out the window and my brain just shut down:

--Partly to mostly cloudy
--34 degrees
--Wind at 20 mph has the flags across the street stiff out off the pole

Nope...
Too deep in the season to need to do this.
I just didn't feel like doing battle with it all.

Come on...I can't be alone in this at this time of year.

Nope, not alone. I went through that inner discussion yesterday. Probably could have gone out, but just couldn't muster up the strength to battle the elements here. Windy, 3C, etc. It has been a crappy October for sure. Rained almost every day here at some point, at least it seemed like it.

I'm sure I'll be wishing I'd gone out yesterday when January and February roll around and outside on the roadie is not an option.

True.
But you may have that option.

Our weather guy keeps saying that this is a classic El Nino autumn....it usually sucks, then the winter is more mild and dry than normal.

They sure got the first part about the crappy Oct. right!

I'm heading out in an hour. THe sun is peeking through the clouds, that will keep 'ya warm.

Plenty of road riding to be had yet before the snow flies (and then too!).

There's no such thing as bad weather ...... (fill in the blank).

for all of us north of the mason dixon line this time of year is always tough.......
now i sit and stew indoors just waiting for the spring......giving my bikes a pat on the saddles to make sure they know i haven't forgotten about them.

It sucks but I am actually riding more now than I was in May and June. I did 18 miles last night, 18 on Monday, will do 15 today because I have an after work obligation. I did skip a bright sunny day on Sunday due to the 25 mph winds with gusts up above 50 mph.

Got some new tights and an Assos winter jacket so I plan on riding DEEP into the winter.

To add to this: I know your major goal for the year was to do your century and you got that done...so maybe there is less to ride for. For me I am currently sitting on 2500 miles for 2006 and I want to get over 3k...I am GOING to get over 3k in 2006.

My feeling is that there are a lot of people in the same boat as you Hip, but they refrain from posting because very often when you make a post like this on BF, you'll get thread trolls who will try to turn it into some sort of penis length contest about how you're not a real cyclist unless you ride naked during blizzards at 30mph on a fixed gear with your tongue hanging out.

If I raced, sure, I'd force myself to go out in all sorts of weather I don't bother with now. But I don't, so when the season winds down, I pull out the mountain bike and enjoy the scenery for a change. Maybe catch a movie with the wife, and have a nice dinner. Springtime is right around the corner.

John,

Yeah, it does help when you can wait longer and go out later in the day too.
I don't have that option.
I have to go around work, so it's ride/no ride by 11:00 a.m. each day. I have to be finished by roughly 12-30 each weekday.

Have a good ride.

We should hook up to do my route some time....take some of your famous ride pictures....maybe see The Knave!

My evil plan is to buy some rollers or a trainer, get as many cycling videos as possible, then ride and watch in the livingroom until She Who Must Be Obeyed can stand it no longer. Actually, this being Alabama, riding a trainer in the garage is not a bad option; as long as I can hook up a tv out there.

Well Hip, I'm forcing myself to ride today. Crazy east wind, high 40's temps. Rain is forecasted for the next week so I've got to get those miles in!

Hey...get this.

The sun came out and it climbed to a whole 38 degrees by noon.
I should have been eating lunch and hitting hte shower before work...but for some reason (perhaps fueled by guilt from this post) I quick changed and did seven miles just to test the front wheel out (got my Vento G3 back last night)

No time to ride at all and a total goofy ,short, rush job...but by God I rode today!

Sometimes I think I'm just nuts.

I didn't ride today but I have a manly excuse: I wrapped my rear derailleur around the cog set on the way home from work last night.

Hey Hip, I'm with ya. For me to ride around work means 6-7 AM or after 5:30 PM and right now, it's dark at those times on top of being cold. I can take one or the other, but not both. It's inside on the trainer until April or so.

50 degrees, overcast, and winds gusting to 25mph but I still, albeit reluctantly and with no enthusiasm, hit the road for a quick 26 miles since I won't have another opportunity to ride until next week.

This is the most important thing, the right gear. I did ride deep last year, and even got a Jan and Feb ride in outside. With the right gear it's doable. The thing is convincing yourself to get over that initial minute or two of the biting cold until you get moving and get warm!

You know, as the season winds down I find I have a hard time doing this. My body seems to crave being outside. It has become a habit my body needs. This past weekend was one of the first that I didn't get out at all and I was edgy to say the least. I was pacing around, looking for things to do, wondering to myself "so this is what it's like to be home at this time of day".

My other issue is that as the riding has decreased the intake of calories has not slowed down. Not good!!! This is another thing my body has to get used to with the seasonal change.
