sales for bikes?
I am coming home to the US around the 14th of december. when would be the best time to look for a bike at a bike shop to catch the best deals?

I always wondered when is a good model year closeout for bikes. Unlike cars, many bikes are bought as Christmas presents so shops might not put them on sale.
Oh, and if you're leaving the US with the bike, watch out for customs. And I would never advocate avoiding customs, like patting mud on your new bike and claiming i'ts old and you brought it over with you.
