"Dancing on the Pedals--" a fun book of Liggettisms!
So I was buying my nephew a copy of "Mike and the Bike" for christmas on amazon, and when I ordered it one of those offers popped up to buy "Dancing on the Pedals, the found poetry of Phil Liggett, the voice of cycling." It was cheap, and Phil rules, so I picked it up. It's basically a compilation of famous quotes from his coverage of pro cycling, divided into chapters and such. I've skimmed it, and there are some great little poems in there... Examples:
Veracity Distilled (on Le Mond and Hinault on the Alpe D'Huez, Stage 18, 1986)
The mountains again
have produced the truth,
and produced two
great men.
Deux Hommes (on Bjarne Riis attacking in yellow, Stage 17, 1996)
Once
you pull on
that golden fleece
you become
two men.
Sound Scale (on Indurain's climb up Alpe D'Huez, 1994)
Look at the cheers
now
for Indurain, the faces
these people.
They've waited
for days to see Indurain
climb this mountain.
Now
they're cheering him up
through a corridor
of noise.
The Inner Race (Stage 20 ITT, 1998)
No hiding
now
just flat-out effort
and hope
it's good enough.
I won't give them all away, but this is great stuff. An excellent coffee table accessory.

i've flipped through it before, and almost bought it. glad i didn't.
not only has ligget lost his touch, his recent 'i support drug free sport' crusade' leads me to believe he's plain lost it.

Phil also seems to have lost his touch as an announcer. Watching some of socal's youtube vids reminded me of the good ol' days of Ligget.
As far as the 'crusade', afaik, he's part of the whole Cycle Sport "I support drug free sport" hysterical nonsense.

My favorite comment made by Phil was in the 2000 Tour, the contenders were all on Vontoux when about 3/4 of the way up the Mont Phil said "Lance Armstrong is toying with the top names in cycling". I heard that these days his eyesight is so poor he has to call the races by sitting 6 inches or so from the monitor to see the action.

I have a 2004 Giro D'italia DVD with Ligget commenting.
Savoldelli passed fans with a sign reading "Paolo dopes on polenta". Phil went on to explain how polenta was made with potatoes.
Phil's obviously never had polenta.
Phil and Paul: Carl and Lenny, or Bert and Ernie?

My fantasy is that they bring in Phil Liggett to do Monday Night Football with John Madden. Then Phil says something like 'Strahan goes for the sack - and he's made an absolute mess of it!!' - at which point Madden just throws him out of the booth on national TV : ).
Phil and Paul S. totally rule. If they ever replace them for the Tour, I'm watching Bandy instead.
