Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

CF delaminates in the heat....?

I live in the hot bit of California... the inside of the car gets to 120F (or more) sometimes... I see CF bikes in backs of cars and have heard that heat can delaminate CF. Should some riders now be scared, or am I now starting an irresponsible rumor?

Carbon Fiber is made with a thermosetting resin. A thermoset is a polymer that is heat-cured, and while it is being cured, it's melting point rises above the curing temperature, causing it to harden. Carbon fiber is usually cured somewhere in the 300-400 degrees F range, so it's melting temp is guaranteed to be at least that high.

Thermoplastics are the plastics that melt, then harden as they cool.
Thermosets are initially soft, then they harden as they are heated (unless they get really, really, super hot).

You need to recalibrate or replace your sarcasm sensor. It's broken.

I think you're starting an irresponsible rumor. I've been riding an OCLV through Sacramento summers since '00. No delamination.

damn you .... i realized my mistake after the fact! ...ok you got me....

point i meant to make was....it's not like plastic that can melt in the sun. it'd take more than 87degrees to melt it.

True, but you can't survive in a 150 degree car in the summer. CF will handle temps much higher than that without breaking a sweat.

Or, to be more anally precise, carbon fiber reinforced thermosetting plastic.

Which was exactly my point. The human dies first.

just curious....does your orca have a powder coat on it? because to powder coat a frame it requires you to bake it at 400degrees

Yay. Another thread espousing the dangers of CF melting. If I ever ride my bike in 300 degree heat and it melts, boy will I have pie on my face.

That pic was taken by a B-52 flying over our group ride on Sunday morning. One of my teammates hit a pothole with his S-Works Tarmac SL. Can't wait for my eyebrows to grow back.
