Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycling stuff for short, fat guys

I'm sure this has been asked before but I do not know how to search for this. Where might I buy cycling clothes that fits? I am 5'8", 210 lb, 38 waist, 30 inseam, 44" chest - basically short and fat. I'm looking for tights and a rain/cold weather jacket. I bought tights from Performance a year or so ago that, while it fits my waist, the inseam is so long that I can pull it up to my chest. Also, the jacket that fits my chest has sleeves that extend beyond my fingers.

Does anyone sell stuff that fit people besides skinny OCPs?

Road racing team kits are pretty much cut for skinny people only. You might try MTB gear, which is baggier in the belly area.

Check the Clydesdale forum. They might have some ideas.

Please don't say "baggier in the belly area" to a fat guy.

I'd stick with the stuff available and the stuff you've got and just modify it accordingly. Shouldn't be too hard to have the ends cut to fit then hemmed. I bet it wouldn't cost more than 5 bucks an article from a seamstress, considering it is a relatively easy job. That way, you're not limited by what's already out there that'll fit you.

Lose weight.

Just kidding. But seriously. I would check the clydes forums. I had a hard time finding jerseys that fit properly until I slimmed down.

Maybe that's why he's getting into cycling. Thumbs up for acknowledging your weight issues (if it's an issue) and wanting to do something about it. My problem is somewhat different. I'm 5'11, 172 lbs, 26"-27" waist and a 34" inseem. The jerseys that I've tried on are way too tight around the the arms and chest area and loose around the midsection.

To the OP, a lot of us here started off in your situation. I was 195 lbs with a 36" waist 4 years ago when I started biking and I'm 5'7.5". I'm now 150 lbs with a 30" waist. Personally, I didn't like the way I looked in tights back then, aside from finding good fit, so I stuck with mountain biking clothes. They're oversized so you can get a comfortable fit.

OK, since we are all sharing.

When I decided to start riding seriously I was 6'4" 270 with a 40" waist.

I am now 199 and wearing a pair of 32 Levi's.

OP-- I feel like a shill because I keep bringing up this company,(https://www.boure.com/) but I love their stuff. I also love that they will make custom sizes for no extra money, and have a no ?'s money back guarantee (even on custom orders). Yes made in in Colorado, for what it's worth, and the best part-- Most of it's black. Glorious, fat-concealing black.

Buy knickers - they'll be like full length tights on a short guy......

Was looking at their web site today. How do the shorts/bibs run on sizing compared to some more popular brands?

OP there has been some NOVO brand shorts & bibs on scambay recently. They run really big. For refrence: 5' 7" 140 lbs on a good day and small in the NOVO is too large for me. Seems like they are cut for your build.
Good luck.

I'd say their sizing is "good American". The size chart on the website is pretty much dead on-- I'm right in between a L/XL for shorts/knicks/tights, and an Xl for jerseys (long arms). I ordered a thermal jersey from them that I thought was too big/bulky and they took it back no problem. Did I mention they have free shipping too? Extra nice. I've been wearing the elite Roubaix tights thru this bloody cold wetness and they are fast becoming my favorite piece of kit. I wouldn't consider myself jumbo sized (trim 6'2" 190) but it's damn tough finding "Euro" stuff that I'm comfortable in. Good luck.

I've had really good luck on cool and cold weather clothing from Foxwear. Lou, the owner, will custom sew base layer (t-shirts), tights, and jackets for you at prices well below the known brands. For example, I have a cool weather jacket (EVAP Light) that is perfect for 40-45 degree days, and it was $75. Call Lou at 877-756-3699 and talk with him about what you need. The website is foxwear.net

I have no connection to foxwear - I'm just a satisfied short fat guy who wants bike gear that fits.
