Roller setup - relative to wheelbase?
I'm working on a little winter project at the moment - designing/fabricating a set of rollers. I've got a couple of questions about roller placement relative to wheelbase. I've got my rear rollers (4" OD - 3 1/2" schd 40 alum. pipe) spaced at 12" c/c - does this sound alright for a 700c wheel, or should I bring them together a little? Also my front roller - should it be slightly ahead of my front wheel's center? Can anyone give me a ballpark number as to how far, or do I bring it ahead until the bike sits level (bike sits at a 2 1/2 deg incline as shown in the picture)?

Give yourself 2 bearings on each end cap...just a thought.
The front wheel axle goes just behind the roller drum axle.

The front hub should be 1/2" behind the axle for the front roller. The rear spacing on my rollers is about 16"

Thanks for the PDF Chopper! Why do you suggest going with twin bearings? When I spec'd this particular bearing, I made sure I was well below the load and speed ratings - am I missing something? I can always bore the flanges deeper and switch to a double row bearing later on.
BD - with the 16" spacing on your rollers - what is the OD of each roller? Does the bike sit quite low in the "cradle"? And with the front roller only 1/2" ahead of the wheel, I imagine the bike does not sit level correct?
Thanks gentlemen!

I like to overbuild things I suppose...support on both the inside and outside of the cup will eliminate (or nearly) the twisting forces. The bearings are fairly cheap right? Double up...make it bomb proof....even if you dont' do it on the front wheel do it on the 2 rear drums.

I gotch' ya now! I was picturing doubled up bearing on the outsides and couldn't see any benefit in that. I'm actually not worried at all about bending in the rollers - using 3 1/2" schd 40 pipe is going to be more than stiff enough I think - especially over a distance of only 14".
The more I think about it though, I may switch the single bearings to the insides of the flanges...
You've got me thinking now - I may end up doing a bunch of calcs now...

I would strongly suggest drilling several sets of holes in case you change bikes.

Yeah DT, there'll be a full pattern of holes for the front roller - probably a pair either side of my design location about an inch apart.
