Mountain biking Roadies

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mountain biking Roadies

So how many other Roadies are also Mountain Bikers? I am first and foremost a Roadie but I find the Mountain bike is a great way to cross train and get that workout when I just don't want to get on the roadbike. As an added bonus, I feel so much stronger on my roadie after a few days on the mountain bike. Anyone else?

ME, ME, ME!!

Actually, I started out MTB and just got into road back in October. BUT, currently pleading with my wife to let me spend $$ on a new MTB (after I already blew the Christmas budget to get my Scott Speedster S20 back in October as my Christmas present for this year).

I am a Mountain biker that is a new roadie. I bought a Cannondale a few months ago. Now that I have a road bike I find that I ride my mountain bike a lot more often. It seems that both types of riding help me in the other. It also helps that I am dropping a lot of weight at the same time.

I started out as a MTBer and still am at heart. But after moving to Delaware and away from a lot of good trails, I started road and triathlons. Still mountain bike whenever I can.

I was about 1 week away from buying my first real MTB when I rode my friend's road bike. Then everything changed. I still would really like to do some mountain biking. I've been a couple times and absolutely loved it.

Yup! Me too, though not as often as I'd like.

Somehow 3hrs on the road still wear me out much more than 3hrs in the mountains.

You know it...

I have always been a Cyclist (Roadie if you will), but was actually more Hardcore MTB in the 90's... I'm returning to it again with the New Construction of a Rocky Mountain ETSX 70 MTB.

I swing both ways too! Lil road, Lil Mountain, Just starting a build up of a single speed road bike. After that a single speed mountain will most likely wander into my stable....

i wish i'd gotten into crack, it has to be cheaper then my bike habit.

Rode mountain for ten years before I ever touched a road bike. Now I've got both. I tend to ride more road than off road, but nothing compares to my single speed mountain bike in terms of the fun factor.

Mountain biking is a fun way to explore beautiful terrain. However, driving 1 hour to the nearest interesting trailhead is too much of a hassle for me. I ride my road bike out my front door 3 or 4 times a week. Haul the mountain bike out in the car maybe once or twice a month.

My passion is with road (and lately fixed/track) but I do sometimes mountain bike. Truth be told though, I'm too much of wuss to ever be very good at mountain biking. I just don't want to get hurt. So I get frustrated with always getting off the bike. Also, the guys I ride with are super hardcore and only want to ride the most technically challenging stuff around. If I lived very close to some good, easier trails I'd ride it a whole lot more. Best thing, is no cars!!

i roll mtb. broke my collarbone during the spring of '02 when my brakes went out going fast down a small grade on some singletrack. that's really my only cycling battle story, which is a good one because you can feel a bump where the bone broke & the grooves of the break.

I was into MTB racing when I was in HS back in the late 80s and early 90s. When I got back into cycling I bought a nice hard tail but found myself riding it on the road so I bought a roadie and traded the MTB for a bike for my wife. This summer I got myself a Cannondale Rush 800 and hooked up with some MTB group rides. I to find 1 or 2 days a week ont he MTB really helps me on the road. Roadie first but love the woods too.

Don't think we haven't seen you cross-pollinating over there in the MTB forum. Question is, did you go full suspension or were you asking a disc versus rim braking...my memory fades. I do remember Mrs. Santa was bringing a MTB home for christmas, right?!?

I started out racing MTBs in the 90's and added road riding for winter training. I now race both MTB, road and cross. MTB is a gateway drug, it lures you into the harder stuff

Now thats not the way to treat a father. Only allowing 1 pint after a ride.

I am a mountain biker that got a road bike this summer. I only lives 6 miles from our Offroad hills so just enough warmup to climb the 15% muddy hills. Road biking is OK but a 4 hour workout on the Giant Does not equal 4 hours on the "Dale MT" Mind you A 4 hour work out on that thing- Yes it is a full offroad Tandem, does not equal anything that I can think of

Santa was to slow on the draw...LoL. I picked up a 06 GF Tassajara last week. I got the Rim Brake version but I have already ordered a set of discs for her. So far I have about 30 miles of singletrack under my belt. I never realized how fun it could be. It will never replace my Roadbike though....Maybe I should never say never .....

I could not imagine.....I know how hard I work on my road tandem and I know how hard I work on the Mountain Bike. To combine the two would kill me I think.
